[Solved] No dialogue windows

Post by Negrin »

Hi all!

I'm hope I'm posting this in the right place and generally doing everything just like I should on this forum. Please don't hurt me if I'm not, though ;) I couldn't find anything through forum search either.

Let me get to the point. To put it short, my OO doesn't show any dialogue windows. I'm using OO 2.1 on Windows XP. Since recently, I can't Save As (and, consequently, can't save any new documents either), I can't insert pictures, I can't even access printer properties when I want to print. You get the picture. I'm not sure this has got anything to do with it, but also quite recently I'd been battling some malware. I came out victorious (or so it would seem), but if I'm not mistaken, the OO problem more or less concident with the malware thing. If so, it would seem like a Windows problem, right? However, everywhere else in the dialogue windows work just fine, including the very same printer settings window which doesn't want to open in OO. Either way, I'm pretty sure it's not an OO problem per se, because to be on the safe side I redownloaded OO and did a fresh install in a new folder.

I'm pretty baffled but as you can imagine, it's pretty hard to work normally like this and I do in fact _work_ in Open Office. Now, I'd be extremely grateful if anyone had any suggestions on how to fix it which wouldn't include reinstalling XP. Sure, I can do it as a last resort but obviously I'd prefer to try less drastic and time-consuming methods first :)

Thanks in advance,
Rafal

One thing that came spontaneously to my mind is that your user profile might be corrupt.

So you could try to create a new one. This is automatically done by OOo if you rename the profile folder.

This is done as follows:
If your windows user name (login name) is "rafal" and your system drive is C:, then your OOo user profile folder is
C:\Documents and settings\rafal\Application data\OpenOffice.org2

You now should close OpenOffice altogether (also end the quickstarter in the system tray if active), then rename the profile folder to e.g.
C:\Documents and settings\rafal\Application data\OpenOffice.org2.old
and restart OpenOffice. Then a new folder is created.

You could also delete the folder, but renaming it allows you to rename it back in case this does not help (bringing you back your old settings).

Another idea could be to download the current version 2.3.1 of OOo from the official site and to try with this one.

Good luck! phil

Indeed this was the case. I've renamed the profile folder as you suggested and it worked. Thanks an awful lot!
