OpenOffice.org for IPhone?

Post by Mahonri85 »

Since they have created such a great Office Suite for PCs, I was wondering if they had plans to create an App for the IPhone as well??

None that I know of, I doubt whether this will ever happen. The development effort would be massive.

I toyed with an iphone yesterday. Lovely look & feel. I just can't imagine why the designers stuck to the querty-layout of the keyboard. It's not as if they expect people typing with ten fingers on it, right?

OK Rather than a full up editable version why not a reader for open office files on the iPhone/iPod Touch as a minimum?

Or something like Documents to Go that works with Open Office files?

How did Docs to Go deal with the problem? I know it worked on Palm OS and other small OS /handheld systems so why not an Open Office version?

Doc2Go works great on the Touch and has just released for the iPad. I use the Word97 format to go between it and OOo versions.

How do you move spreadsheets? My OO Calc things are too big and don't work in Excel, that was one reason I moved to OO initially.

The short answer is because there is hardly sufficient development resource to do what uis being done now, without adding another platform and environment to support.

You do know we're not the developers? Just users trying to help other users. The developers don't hang out here.

OpenOffice.org for Nokia N900 phone (does work nicely)

Post by sswam »

I wouldn't buy an Apple iPhone because they are very unfriendly to developers, saying you can't use the programming language of your choice, only C, C++, Obj C or JavaScript, and you're not allowed to have root access. So, Apple can go to hell. I bought a Nokia N900 phone which runs Maemo Linux, based on Debain, and I am very happy with it. OpenOffice does not yet run directly in Maemo although it would be possible to port it. However there is an "Easy Debian" package which installs a true Debian system in a chroot. The image comes with OpenOffice, GIMP and some other apps, and it should be possible to install fairly much any binary package from Debian/ARM in this chroot. I have overclocked the N900 to 1.15 Ghz using the "power-kernel" package (with no ill effects), and OpenOffice performs well at this speed, and tolerably at the default speed of 600Mhz.

So, throw your un-open iPhone into the sea, and get a N900!
