I have a chapter of my thesis currently in preparation. It needs many inserted pictures from files. They're all .gif format to keep the file size small, and the current size of the whole document, about 28 pages, text and pix, is about 7Mb. It's in Word format (.doc) so that my supervisor can open it, but hte problems below apply equally to a saved copy in .odt format.
1. The last few pictures are 'shrunk' to an almost invisible line at the left side of the page whenever I open the document. I can expand them by dragging the little green squares, but even if I then save the document, they're 'collapsed' again when I open it.
2. At 100% scale, scrolling from page to page is slow and pauses quite a lot. This doesn't happen at larger zoom ratios, however.
Another chapter, much larger than this one, doesn't have any of these bugs. I've set the cache sizes etc very high, but it makes no difference.
Any suggestions?

Re: inserted pictures
Can you make a test document of just one page and a few images? You can upload attachments to this forum. I suggest editing your signature from the User Control Panel, to include your OS and current OpenOffice version.

Re: inserted pictures
Try to anchor the graphics As character (not To character). It's a more robust method to handle pictures.

Re: inserted pictures
Is the original width of the problem pictures greater than 22 inches? I've found that this happens with pictures with an original size wider that 22 inches when saving in the DOC format. At first I thought it was due to a size limit in Word (there is a 22 inch document width limit), but now think it may be a problem in Writer's export filter.gkennaway wrote: 1. Re: inserted pictures
After more testing, it appears that anchoring As Character is a contributing factor in this problem. When I anchored pictures wider than 22.75 inches As Character, the pictures collapsed when saving in Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format. The same pictures did not collapse when anchored To Character, To Paragraph or To Page.Hagar de l'Est wrote:Try to anchor the graphics As character (not To character). I filed a bug report based on results of testing:

Re: inserted pictures
This issue has been confirmed. This post from last month describes the same issue and confirms that the problem does occur only when the image is anchored As Character:
