[Solved] Side numbers

Post by stikur »

I have been trying to read discussions on side numbers but they are above my horizon. Could anyone please take pity on a computer idiot and explain step by step in simple terms how to do a book manuscript that should have six unnumbered pages in the beginning and then number 7,8,9 etc on the rest. I would like to place the numbers in the center of footers. Extremely grateful for help.

Thanks for tips! Paul explains how to leave the first page without number. Sorry if I am dense, but how do I make pages 1-6 look the same - no footer, no number? I tried different ways, but failed miserably. Could someone please explain what is perhaps obvious to more practised users.Very grateful. Stikur

You need to use different page styles. One without footer, another with footer.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks for answer. Would it be possible for someone to explain in simple terms how I introduce footer in page 7 and following pages without getting footers in the preceding ones. I have tried to insert page break but I must overlook something. Please forgive my persistency, but this is important to me and I have difficulty in understanding the terms used in tutorials. Thank you in advance. Stikur

When you select Insert > Manual Break (menu bar), the Insert Break dialog is opened. If you leave [None] in the Style box on the dialog, then the page style after the page break will be the same as the page style preceding the page break. Since the footer is part of the page style, then adding a footer to a page following the page break will also add a footer to all pages before and after the page break.

A page style needs to be specified in the Style box when inserting the page break. You should create a new page style to be used for pages with footers. Use the search term "page styles;creating and applying" to find instructions in Help. When applying the page style, ignore the instructions in "To apply a page style". They assume that the page breaks are already in place. You should follow the instructions in "To apply a page style to a new page" which tell you to select a page style in the Style box when inserting a manual page break.

After you have created and applied your new page style, you can then add the footer to a page following the page break.

It is done! Thank you for instructions! Of course I should have educated myself better before starting to write, but I was too eager to get going. Thank heavens for this forum. Stikur
