formatting barcharts and piecharts

Post by qwertybuddy »

Hi everyone,

I've made some barcharts and piecharts directly in Writer. Because I've been moving them around, now they're all of various sizes, and some of the bars are thicker than others too. I tried to adjust their sizes through dragging, but that just seems to distort them even more

Can anyone tell me if there's a way to "uniform" the barcharts and piecharts?

Thanks!

Have you read the Forum Survival Guide?

What version of OOo are you using?

What you are describing sounds unusual to me. At the very least, double-clicking the chart, then clicking back on the Writer document somewhere to exit the chart editor should re-draw the chart and fix any graphics glitches.

If the chart is still distorted, then you may have done it yourself, and will have to un-do it manually.

It might be helpful if you could upload an example.

Hey thanks for taking the time to respond.

I'm using OpenOffice 2.3 on Windows XP.

Here's a sample: the bars from different diagrams are not of the same thickness; the piecharts are not of the same size either. I guess I can manually drag each and every pie to adjust their sizes, but is there a quicker way to do it? I tried clicking on each one of them twice and then the document, but nothing changed...

Ok, I see what you mean. If is very difficult to get a consistent appearance.

I don't think there is any easy way to do it. The only thing you can do is just try to standardize all the parameters and manually make them as consistent as possible.

E.g. to get the same bar thickness, you need the same number of rows (categories) in each chart (they may be empty), and the same height (roughly) for the chart.

The width is more difficult, because the overall width includes the labels, where what you really want is the same size for the chart area exclusive of the labels.

Personally, I avoid the 3d styles. I find they generally look bad, and there are so many different parameters that you can fiddle with them for hours but it never looks any better. It only makes it that much harder to get a consistent look. There are also limitations in the current graphics layer that make the 3d styles have far lower quality than the 2d styles.
