Corrupt ODT

Post by tdmca »

I have a corrupt ODT file. When I open the file in Writer it tries to open it but there is not readable text in the file. Is there a way to fix the file and recover the data?

Any help would be appreciated?

Thanks,
Terry

Do you see any kind of error message?

If there is an error, and the file does not load (you may get a blank window instead of your file--look at the window title ), then you have a shot at fixing it. If the file actually does open, but there is no content, then there isn't much that can be done.

In any case, you can try uploading the file to one of the free sharing sites (mediafire.com or filecrunch.com) and posting a link here. Someone can take a look and see if anything can be recovered.

No need to upload to another place - it can be done here using "Upload attachment" below.

The files does open, but it is also not empty. I think that OpenOffice is not seeing its header information and just displaying it a text. When I compare the corrupt file to other OpenOffice documents in a text editor there is a section, common to the good documents that is missing.

I will post a copy of the document when I can. It will have to wait until I get home.

Here is the file. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think that it is missing the OOo header.

Thanks,
Terry

Sorry, I can't do anything with it. It's just random data as far as I can see. Nothing I have can make any sense of it.

I can open it in a text editor but nothing readable, I doubt it has been saved in .odt format.
Do you have a backup in your /backup folder (in your OOo user profile)?

Thank you all for your attempts. I have gone back to my hand written draft and I am retyping it. It is a little set back but I get through it. You have all shown me that my thoughts about the OpenSource community were right and moving to OpenOffice was a good idea.

Thank You,
Terry
