Not sure if LT can work with the Ubuntu version of OOo. Can you try the Sun version: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.?

See also: [Solved] [New LT version] Cannot install LT on 3.0.1rc1.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Had you a previous version installed? If so, try to reset your OOo user profile but don't transfer your personal data during the welcome process, configuration files from the former version might corrupt the new profile.

BTW, I guess you're meaning Kubuntu 9.04 and not 3.04.

Renamed /user to /user.old. Restarted OO but no welcome screen altho a new /user was created. Still got error message on trying to install LT. This time osl::File:: createTempFile() failed.

Well, no idea. You can try to install 3.0.1 and LT 0.9.6 to see if there is any improvement.

When I looked into it, I thought I couldn't install 3.01 in Kubuntu. Can I and how?

Why couldn't you? See the tutorial I've linked above.

I see 3.0.1 for most of the languages here (address from the tutorial): http://download.openoffice.org/other.html.

If you look under English and Linux DEB you will see it says Download3.0.0. I removed my old 3.0.0 and downloaded from that link just in case it was 3.0.1. It indeed turned out to be 3.0.0 again, with the same error again occurring. It would appear that OO 3 LanguageTool is not ready for prime time on DEB.
