OpenOffice.org and Thermal Printer (Labels)
OpenOffice.org and Thermal Printer (Labels)
Okay. So here at work we have an older thermal printer. Its made by the company Eltron, and was eventually bought out by Zebra. We use the printer to print our labels for our products. However we inadvertently uninstalled it and there is no drivers for it on the internet
(Model Eltron TLP 3642). My question is if it is possible to configure open office to work with the printer without the driver , i got it to make the label the size that i want, but i cant get it to print
. i don't know why it wont print on it if its the settings i have on it or ? Like when i got to print , it will feed the label but there will be no ink on it.. Solutions Anyone? Any Help will be greatly appreciated...

Hi and welcome to the forums.
I think you have two chances.
1) Find the right printer driver.
2) Find some other driver that happen by chance to work with that printer.
Good luck.

Hey Thanks for the quick reply.
I did Find the driver.. i had to register for it but whatever, and i installed it , but it still wont print
... maybe because that printer is ancient. So there is no way to just make the label and expect it to work on that old thermal printer?

Simply put, between OOo and the Printer there sits layers of other software, including the printer driver and Windows itself. No matter what you do in OOo if WIndows can't talk to the printer properly, then OOo can't.
Can you print anything from any other application (Notepad, even) to the printer?

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
Hmmm. I see.
No I cant print anything out of that printer because its only use here for it is for the labels ... plus its a super small printer... think a little smaller than the dymo label printer... and the labels it prints are about an inch only and half an inch wide... i did download a label creator, and that seems to communicate just fine.. so im thinking that maybe i dont have OOo configured correctly for that label right?

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
I would take this as an opportunity to get away from such a special-purpose printer.
Can you use sheet labels? You can get sheets that have pre-cut labels that are that small, and the sheets will work with any printer.
I've even used roll labels (~3/8 x 1"), affixed a strip of labels to a standard sheet of paper, and printed them using a standard laser printer.

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
Absolutely. I used a standard laser printer and standard-sized label sheets, or roll-labels taped onto a standard sheet of paper.
I used a custom-made template with a table to lay out the label text, but the label templates included with OOo should work as well.
Obviously, the sheet labels are simpler to use, but we needed to use special labels that were only available as a roll, and I did not want to get into using a special printer.

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
I've used standard shop-bought labels in different sheet formats such as Avery standard sizes and those from other stationary companies with no issue. I also use 'business card' labels and print membership cards for a Club on them. All from OOo, on both Laser (Samsung) and Ink Jet (HP) printers.

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
The following directions are for windows. For Linux, use minicom?
If it is a serial port or even a LPT port printer, there may not be a driver.
At the cmd.exe prompt, enter mode.
If you know it is connected to COM1:, type something like "mode COM1: /status" or better yet do mode /? to get better help.
If it says it is unavailable, then some other software has control of COM1:.
You can use the print command to print text to the COMx or LPTx ports.
If form advance and some commands work but not all, you probably need to adjust baud rate, parity, and handshaking parameters or something similar.

Menu Bar --> Format --> Page --> Orientation --> Landscape
Putting all the formatting options under a Format menu is better than putting some under File and other places as is commonly done with MS Office.

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
I think the format of the label is tied to the design of the label itself. What I mean is, an Avery xyz labels willexpect sideways printing, not vertical printing, but an Avery 123 might expect it the other way round. I'm not sure whether you have much control over that. perhaps if you create your own customer label format you might be able to specify the orientation during the design of the label.

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
What driver are you using?
The printer seems to have graphics capabilities, so with the proper driver it should be able to print in any orientation the software understands.
If you're using a "generic" driver, you're probably tied to text direction(s) handled internally by the printer.
According to Zebra Technologies' web pages, they acquired/merged with Eltron some 10 years ago, and your printer has been discontinued, as you say. Their download pages don't list a driver for your printer, but the downloads listed for the TLP 3842 look promising.

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
Thanks again. My company went as far as buying the driver, lol so we have it .. but it still wont print right. its frustrating, i manually put in all the dimensions of our label, set it up to do landscape.. tried to rotate it , and again and again, still cant get it to print. would it be a better solution to upgrade the printer itself? i mean it is like 17 years old hahaha

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
Quite right! Label printers are not that expensive. In a commercial setting, time spent trying to get some old equipment to work soon amounts to higher expenses than the cost of a new printer (working hours, revenue loss, other side effects). Donate the old printer to some worthy cause.

Re: Open Office and Thermal Printer (Labels)
Actually the printer is multi purpose I don't think it only prints labels but also others will be done.I think you are missing some thing about the printing just consult a hardware engineer you definitely get the solution for it.hectorr wrote:Hmmm. I see.
