[Solved] Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
[Solved] Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
Hello,
Recently, I just updated to the most current version of OpenOffice, which I believe was 3.0.1. As a result of the update, my bullets and numbering function will not allow me to create a bulleted list, and the bullets now display as a black square. I have tried formatting the bullets under the bullets and numbering settings only to get no successful results. Typically I would be able to solve this issue without a problem, but the situation didn't occur until after I updated the program. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks,
--Jake

Re: Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
Strange. Can you upload a sample file (see: How to attach a document here)?
You can try to reset your OOo user profile. But during the welcome process, don't transfer your personal data, former configuration files might corrupt the new profile.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. Here is the sample, but it is in the form of a picture, as I made it using a print screen function. All sensitive data has been removed.
Thanks,

Can't you upload the file itself? As you've noticed, it should be a problem with the font. If the display is correct on my system with your file, it means that the problem is with your system.
But that's rather weird if this has been triggered by a mere upgrade.

Just tried reseting the user profile and did not get anywhere. Still the same problem with the bullets. Numbering seems to work normally still, but the bullets don't. In the picture, you can clearly see the blocks, which should be showing up as circles. Also, when I delete (backspace) the bullet, it doesn't delete the bullet, instead it infinitely backspaces and does not delete the bullet. It creates series of indents of sorts. Any help would be appreciated, otherwise, I am going to have to switch back to IBM Symphony (which is something I really don't want to do).
Thanks,
Jake

Sorry, didn't know you wanted the original file, but I suppose it makes sense. So here's the file for you so you can test it out on your system. And yes, up until the upgrade, my word processing really was working fine. Never really experimented with the other components of the software, so I can't answer for the others.
Anyway...here it is.

Re: Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
Here is what I see:
So it seems to be fine.
There is something strange however: the font for the bullet seems to be Tahoma but in the styles.xml file of the .odt file, the list style seems to be with OpenSymbol font. Moreover, in the content.xml file, the list style is "list24432418" which doesn't sound like a valid name.
Has this file been created with OOo? Can you display correctly characters in the OpenSymbol font?

No, the OpenSymbol font will not display the characters correctly. And, the file name, "list..." doesn't even sound familiar. Any steps from here you can think of?

So the problem is that font. Can you try to install it from the net?

Could you tell me how to do that?

Re: Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
Google 'opensymbol font', download the .ttf file double-click it should do the trick to install. Else, drag it to your \Fonts Windows folder.

Re: Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
I thought OOo included the opensymbol font, no?

Re: Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
After having updated the OpenSymbol font, I find that the problem still persists.
Perhaps it is one of the other true types? I don't know, any suggestions at this point would be helpful. For now, I am just using Symphony, but I want to use OOo, instead of that piece of @#$% software. Thanks.

Re: Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
Yes indeed. But if the font cannot be displayed, perhaps it has been corrupted. But if it doesn't work even with reinstalling the font, it's deeper than I would have thought.acknak wrote:I thought OOo included the opensymbol font, no?

Re: Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
Any suggestions from here? I checked the fonts within the system folder, and they are all there. It's odd that all the bulleted entries work in other word processing programs (Microsoft Works, Symphony, etc.), but not OOo. Any ideas?

Re: Post-Update Issue with Bullets and Numbering
I am back with an update on the situation. So, after all of the steps to remedy the situation, I finally realized that I had an install package for OOo 2.4, so I uninstalled my 3.0.1 install and rolled back to 2.4. After that, I let the OOo automatic updater download and install the 3.0 install package. After installing the update over the previous 2.4 installation (which in 2.4, the bullets worked without an issue), I realized that the bullets were working and functioning normally. So, I think the problem was that when I installed the update over the 3.0.0 installation, something must have happened with the true type fonts during the update process.
Anyway, the problem is solved, and I fixed it by rolling back to OOo 2.4 and then updating back to version 3.0.1. Hopefully if anyone encounters the same issue, they can solve it in the same way, but never the less, I fixed it. So, thanks again for all of your help, and I hope we can meet again on the boards under better circumstances. Take care.
