Paste Function Doesn't Work

Post by Keith B »

I am a new user of OO, and recently downloaded OOv3.0. The problem that I have, is that I can not copy and paste, or cut and paste within Writer, or within Calc for that matter. The paste function button is grayed out on the tool bar, as well as under the edit menu; ctrlV does not work either. I am running XPsp3. A bit more information; I can not cut / copy paste within MS Works word processor either. When I try, I get a message that says I may not have enough memory. I have 108 Gigs of free space on my hard drive, so the message really doesn't make sense. I have not found this specific problem listed elsewhere on any of the forums. Help much appreciated.

If you can't cut and paste in other applications either, it sounds like the problem is with Windows, not OO. Have you rebooted the computer and tried cut and paste form a simple non memory hungry application like Wordpad (with nothing else open)? Did it happen immediately after you installed OO (or anything else)? When you hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and click the "Performance" tab does it show any free physical memory? Have you done a virus scan?

On one of my machines, running Win2K, I find I cannot paste into any application unless the destination application is open before the required item is cut or copied. If t he cut or copy is done before the destiniation is open, the Paste entry is greyed out, as you describe.

Try opening the destination application _before_ cutting or copying and see if that works. I am at a loss to know why this should happen. I suspect it is a residue of a previously installed and now removed program, but which?

Here, the OS is talking about the RAM available, not the HD space left.

Thank you for taking the time to offer some help. I have rebooted the computer multiple times, and I am able to copy / cut / paste within other applications such as Quickbooks, and even Works Spreadsheet. I don't believe that the copy / cut / paste function in OO has worked since the program was installed. Free physical memory on computer is about 96000K out of 458225K. Total Kernel memory is 93672K with 57108K paged and 36564K nonpaged. Paging file initial size is 670MB, max size is set to 3000MB, currently allocated 671MB. I am running Computer Assoc. security suite and have run a virus scan with no viruses found. I am running OO on another computer that is running Vista, and have no problems with the programs on that computer. So I don't know if the problem is within my settings, operating system, hard drive or the program(s).

I found a solution to my cut and paste problem within windows, where pasting did not work unless the destination was open before the cut/copy. I am not at that computer so haven't the exact details to hand, but it was the result of a Google search, found on a Mozilla list, and the title was "clipboard doesn't work". It involved deleting one Registry entry, something like "AppInit". Usual caveats about Registry editing apply.
