[Solved] Bibliography questions

Post by Vardiss »

Well, I'm moving back to OOo after trying the new Word that came with Vista - as expected, it sucks.

It did have some nice bibliography tools, however. How can I do the following in OOo?

1) Is there any kind of input template for the Chicago format? If I selected that in Word, it only asked me for the things Chicago expects and it formatted it correctly.

2) I like to insert the bibliography reference from the database into the footnotes/endnotes. Is there way to get this to appear *without* the brackets? i.e. [Kenoyer 1998]

Thanks,

Dean

OOo's built-in bibliography feature is very limited. You may wish to investigate bibus http://bibus-biblio.sourceforge.net/wik ... /Main_Page, which is recommended by many OOo users. I have never used it, so I don't know if it includes templates like you want.

Regarding your item 2), this (incredibly well hidden) feature may do what you want:
1) Go to Insert > Indexes and Tables > Indexes and Tables.
2) On the Index/Table page, under "Type and title", choose Bibliography for the Type. Optionally change or delete the word "Bibliography" for the Title.
3) Now a section for "Formatting of the entries" is visible. In the Brackets drop-down list, choose [none].

This selection affects BOTH the entries (citations) in the text and those in the Bibliography list. If you want brackets around citations, you can type them in as needed.

Thanks! That fixes it.

I talked to a friend in academia and he recommened http://www.zotero.org for bibliographies. It can apparently automatically add the biblio information directly from web sites (like for libraries) which saves a lot of typing. And it has a OOo plug-in.
