All my Word docs have self-converted to Adobe Acrobat docs

Can anyone tell me why, on booting up my pc today, ALL of my documents saved in WORD have self-converted into Adobe Acrobat Documents? If you can suggest a remedy that would be great. If I now save a file from Open Office Writer in .odt that's ok, but if I try to save as a WORD doc it becomes an Adobe file.

Perhaps, for whatever reason, the default application for opening .doc (.docx?) files has become set to Adobe Reader?

Right click on one such file and select "Always open with" and choose MS Word or OpenOffice (whichever you prefer).

RoryOF's advice notwithstanding, ...

• If you have trouble with files saved from Word, perhaps ask in Microsoft support forums. In this context, "Word" usually refers to the Microsoft Word application, a component of Microsoft Office/O365/M365/whatever they call their suite today. This place is a support forum for a different Office suite, not an open space for help with general "office-suite related" issues.
• If you have saved your files from Writer, but to Word file format, they should still open from the File - Recent menu option. Did you try that?
• If you reuse file names (e.g. to have some kind of "folder mirroring" of content types), and you copied names with the extension, this defeats the "automatic extension" setting in many cases. The filename extension is the feature the system uses to classify files by type. IOW, your files are perhaps not converted to different type, but by extension they "pose as" a different type. (This is more likely to happen gradually, not to multiple files overnight, though.)
• Adobe Acrobat/-Reader may also have hijacked the files upon install. Did you recently install or update the Adobe Reader or other Adobe products, or do you have a different viewer app which supports multiple file types? Again, this place is not the correct venue for issues with other parties' products (Adobe & al.). You may want to ask the software vendor, or perhaps notify them of unwanted side effects of their install.
