[Solved] JRE for OpenOffice on MacOS 26

Post by RobTr »

Hi,

I'm struggling to find the correct JRE which will enable me to run Open Office. I have just got this new MacBook Air and it's the only thing I've struggled with.

Thanks,

The developers' instructions are on the Apache OpenOffice download page.
Apache OpenOffice → Download → Common → Java instructions

Here are my notes from five years ago, using a Mac with an ARM64 chip.
Q06: How do I install Java for OpenOffice on a Mac?

If you need more help search the forum. Perhaps start with [Solved] OpenOffice compatible with M1 chip and Sequoia 15.5?.
MacOS PKG installer packages

As discussed in Q06, after you install Java you need to tell OpenOffice to use Java. It will be helpful to know if and how you installed Java and what type of Mac you have (Intel ARM64 chip or Apple Mn chip). This information will be useful in helping others with the same question. Because we helped you, you should help us.

Search found 501 matches: java

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit ✏️ button and add [Solved] to the start of the Subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.

Wow, what an unpleasant response!

I have a MacBook Air running an M4 chip. As to how, I just tried searching for the relevant 32-bit JRE. Ive tried a couple but no good.

Happy to help anyone I can, but I'm a complete novice when it comes to stuff like this.

My original database was on my old MacBook Pro.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help, and be polite about it.

The post I linked for you earlier has instructions for the M1 chip. Try that. You're welcome to search the forum yourself for topics about the M4 chip. I'm not going to do that for you. It's your problem, of course. I don't have that hardware or use MacOS 26.

Any MacOS version in the last five years is 64-bit, and only runs 64-bit applications. You must use a 64-bit Java. That information was in Q45/A45, link above.

As someone asking for free help with free software, you are hardly in a position to dictate terms. Just as a reminder, there are no developers here. This is a user-to-user forum. We're all users here, just like you.

I'm trying to get you to provide information about what solution you used for MacOS 26 on Apple M4 hardware. Almost no one here asking for help provides that, so I find it's necessary to implore people to give us that information so we can pass it along to others. I rather doubt that anyone has told us what Java they've installed with an M4 chip or on MacOS 26. Would it hurt you to help us?

All we ask is that when you try a suggestion given here, and it works, that you report back and tell that it worked. And that you report that something didn't work. That will help other people with the same problem. That's all. It's amazing how little we ask in return for the help that we offer freely. Most of the people who answer questions here, are practical folks. They want you to get on. Don't waste your, and our!, time by not giving all the information that is needed to solve your problem. Many of us have been in this "trade" for more than ten years, we kind of know what information is needed to help people. Lastly, when you go to the doctor, do you say something like: "Hey, I'm ill," and when he asks questions, you say: "you figure out what's the matter with me, you're the doctor?" He will probably tell you to go home.

Quick update:

I tried numerous extensions without success.

In the end I simply installed Libre Office and it worked first time!
