[Solved] Same document, different pages on 2 PCs
[Solved] Same document, different pages on 2 PCs
Hello to all,
i am facing a weird difference at the same .odt file between two pc`s.
One is windows 10 and the the other is windows 11. Properties and text styles and display resolutions etc etc are the same. The only difference is the monitor which in windows 10 is laptop and has 17" and at windows 11 is a desktop with 18"
The .odt file is an A5 book.
In windows 11 it shows perfect each page of the .odt file but in windows 10 at my laptop which is most needed it shows the pages ruined, e.x. page 2 last lines goes to next page and page 3 goes a page after it should be.
I am facing this error only in one .odt file. Other books doesnt have this problem. They are shown at both pc`s the same.
Is there anyone that can tell me what it could be ?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
One possibility is that the computers are using different fonts. The file may say it is using the same font, but if the font is missing, it will be silently substituted. On Windows 10, look under Settings -> Personalization -> Fonts to see if a font is available.

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
I use the same fonts in both, could it be something in the fonts other than just using the same ones in both pc`s cause i think too the fonts is the one that creates this and it uses 4 different fonts in the .odt file.
I will check this better maby reinstall them and play around with the fonts needed and repost.
If something else comes in mind too about this plz let me know.

If the exact same fonts are installed on both machines, then you need to check the paragraph styles in use. Are there slightly larger white spaces between paragraphs on the problem machine? If so, adjust the paragraph style using /Format, Styles and Formatting. press first icon from left on that window and examine the "Indents and Spacing tab" for the paragraph style(s) in use. Also check the line spacing setting on that tab.

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
I dont change anything on the .odt file, as i take if from the desktop right now i opened it in laptop and it has this weird thing.
I removed all fonts and installed the ones needed but again it shows different for a line or so, but this line creates new pages in the end of each page.
Can i somehow copy the settings i use on this file from one one pc to my other ?

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
What's the difference with the documents that display correctly? Do you use other fonts? Was the document imported from another format, like MS docx? If it's only that file, what happens if you copy & paste the content into a blank document? Maybe the document structure got damaged, and copying to a new document might help fix that.

The other thing to check, again using /Format, Styles and Formatting, this time fourth icon from left on that window, is the setting of the page margins on the page style(Is) in use.

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
Nope, nothing!
I use the same .odt file as i take it from the correct view of it at windows 11 and i open it to my laptop windows 10.
Same open office versions, same fonts, same display dimensions etc. etc.
The only thing is different which i checked it, was that in one pc i use default language English US and at the other English UK
No other .odt file has problems, only this.
Its a hole book with paragraphs, tables and images too inside, i cant copy it. Why copy it after all, i copy the file and i use it in any pc with OpenOffice.
Is there a way i can take all the settings of the OpenOffice from my correct pc to the false one ?
Just to check all these details of paragraphs etc etc which i dont understand why would happen only at this one.
There must be some setting.
Thanks for your time and help

I meant that you open the file, select all text, copy, start a new, blank document, paste. It might fix something. If it doesn't help, at least it won't do any harm.

The font name can be displayed but it doesn't mean that it is actually used.
For a brand new document, are the fonts used in your file available on both machines?

An OpenOffice extension at
https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/pr ... fonts.html
will check a document and report on missing fonts.

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
unbelievable, in the one pc that shows the .odt file correct, one font is not installed but it reads that font like it is installed.
In the other that i try to see it correct but it moves pages with new lines in the end of each page it has the font installed but have these errors in the .odt
When i reinstalled the font on the one that it was correct, it made the same errors!
How can i fix this without messing the hole book around ?
Can i find an equlevant one somehow and replace the font with a new font and .odt replace byitself all the lines using this font ?

You are sure that you don't use that font in the documents that are good? I suppose that the font file is bad.

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
Your problem can only be solved by careful detective work. Install any missing font, then restart OpenOffice, as it only detects installed fonts on its startup. In fact, best to restart the computer entirely (a power off reset, not a hibernation), to be certain it has correctly detected the changed font(s).
Then, if the two screens show differing results, you need to carefully check the same page on each computer and note how the differences arise. Are the equivalent paragraphs taking more vertical space on one than on the other? Then you should check paragraph spacings as I suggested in an earlier posting.

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
Yeap it is in the list of the .odt file but not installed on the machine! And it shows the .odt correct without lines going to new pages!
The only way to fix that is to have installed the font, open the .odt file and fix all pages the lines that uses this font again so i can fix the extra lines.
If i leave it like this, only the one pc that hasnt got the font installed see`s it ok.

Re: Same odt, different pages at between 2 Pc`s
If the TestFonts utility shows the substituted font that is used for the missing font, change the Paragraph Style(s) that use the target font to use the substituted font , and all should be well.
If the substituted font is so close to the desired font that you couldn't tell the difference, then what will it matter if you use the substituted font?
