						[Solved] OpenOffice file format issue

I have a number of envelope files which were written in ODT format.
I am not sure what happened but now, only one file is in ODT format. The others have been changed to WPD format and are totally unreadable.
My current office ver is 4.1.15 on Windows 11.
Is there some way to restore these files to ODT format? I have yet to find a way.
thank you.

Most likely, all that has happened is that Windows has associated the wrong program with these files. What happens if you start OpenOffice and use the menu File -> Open to open one of the files?

Re: open office file format issue
What does the extension, which is the letters after the last dot on the file name say? .odt or .wpd?
If its not visible in windows explorer, right click on the file and choose properties from the popup menu that appears and look at the Details tab (though I'm on Windows 10, 11 might differ)
OO doesn't have a filter to open WPD format files but LibreOffice does.

Re: OpenOffice file format issue
all of my old open office, envelope and address label files, are now in .wpd format which is totally unreadable in open office.
I have discovered a tedious workaround for the envelope files. hose are readable in notepad and the data can be retrieved and re-saved in OO as .odt. Unfortunately the notepad cannot open readable data from the address label files. I'll give LibreOffice a shot. Only question is, if LibreOffice opens the wpd files, can it save them as odt files?

Yes LibreOffice will be able to save them as odt files after opening.

Re: OpenOffice file format issue
well, I installed LibreOffice and al the wpd files now associate with it. I can read the envelope files but cannot copy paste to open offfice.
Also, notepad no longer reads the wpd files. As for my address label files, luckily I have paper print out and can re-build them in Open Office.
Maybe I missed something in Libre but I could not find a save as odt file. I'll look again but help on this might be useful. I did get an error message that .odt was not a registered default for libre. I don't know why Windows associated my ort files with word perfect. I've never used word perfect and it is not even installed on thhis win 11 computer.

On the /File /Save as you should be able to drop the File Type line to select .odt; it is good also to have "Automatic file name extension" checked.

Choose "odf text document".
Testing with a text file as I don't have a wordperfect one, it give the option to save as "odf" in LibreOffice - and then saves as "odt".

Re: OpenOffice file format issue
Yes - I discovered that and have successfully saved my necessary envelope files so open office can use them again.
My label files are a lost cause. I've kept them so I can rebuild the ones I will need and, like the older, no longer needed envelope files, will be discarded.
I appreciate every one's help in this. Thanks!
