[Solved] Program crash on startup

any help please...

as of today 27/09/25, any document that i save causes the application to crash when i re-open the document, esentially rendering the whole thing unuseable. any document saved prior to today opens fine. upon opening the newly saved documents that i have worked on today, they appear in the writer window, but after a brief pause the app crashes and closes. have tried re-install and installing older versions of Writer, same result. very weird, any ideas please help

Try resetting your user profile. A corrupted profile can lead to strange behavior. To do that,
Shutdown OpenOffice
Open any folder and enter %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the address bar
Rename the user folder to user_old
Restart OpenOffice and you should get the registration screen.

Make a new document and see if the problem persists.

thank you for the reply and suggestion, i have tried this and unfortunately the problem persists

i happen to have another laptop (which has never had OO installed), made new installation and created a new doc, copying some elements from previous work, and get the same crash on startup when re opening saved document

TBH i have been using OO a lot lately, with extensive bugs and crashes, sometimes leading to loss of work, which is a shame as i would like to continue using it

Give LibreOffice a try and you might have better luck with that, it's not that much different from using OpenOffice. thanks for suggestion to switch to LibreOffice, it is working well and no crashes! what a relief
