What is included a crash report sent to OpenOffice?

Post by Jeff4567 »

Hi,
- I was working on an OpenOffice Writer document file when I needed to reboot my system.
(the reason was not related to OpenOffice)
- I was not able to save/close OpenOffice Writer before the reboot.
- The next day I opened that OpenOffice Writer document file to work on it.
- I got that message that says there was a version of the file that had not been recovered. (or something like that)
- I selected the file to be recovered.
- I was asked if I wanted to send a Crash Report to OpenOffice support to help figure out what happened.
- I usually say 'no' because I know what happened.
- But, instead, I clicked on the option to send in a Crash Report.

--> Unfortunately, the file that was being 'recovered', contained personal information in the body of the document.

--> Would the crash report that was sent out contain the text of the document?
--> Is a copy of the sent report saved on my laptop for me to review to see what was sent? If 'yes', where?
Thanks, Jeff

Details here:

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/CrashReporting

From that, its sending a report, not your file.

Google AI answer to: where does openoffice store crash reports
OpenOffice's crash reports and related files, like backups, are typically stored in its user profile directory, which varies by operating system. For Windows, you can often find these files under C:\\Users\\<YourUsername>\\AppData\\Roaming\\OpenOffice.org\\<VersionNumber>\\user\\. You may need to enable "Show hidden files and folders" in your system settings to see the AppData folder.
Finding the Location

Open the User Profile
Windows: Navigate to C:\\Users\\<YourUsername>\\.

macOS: Go to the ~/Library/Application Support/ folder.
Linux: Look in ~/.config/openoffice.org/.

Locate the OpenOffice Folder
Inside your user profile, find the OpenOffice.org or a similar folder.
Check for Version and User Folders

Look for a folder labeled with your OpenOffice version number (e.g., 3, 4).

Then, find the user subfolder.

Find Backup or Crash Files

Within the user folder, look for a backup folder, as this is where OpenOffice often saves backups of documents before a crash.

You might also find other configuration or registry files in other subfolders within the user profile.

Important Notes

Hidden Files:
You may need to enable viewing hidden files and folders in your operating system's file explorer settings to see these directories.

LibreOffice:
If you are using LibreOffice, a successor to OpenOffice, the path will be similar but may refer to LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice.
Manual Search:
If you cannot find the default path, you can try searching your entire computer for files with .tmp or .bak extensions that might be related to OpenOffice.

Well, AI misleading people again
Linux: Look in ~/.config/openoffice.org/.
Bollocks! And I doubt the locations for other operating systems given are any more accurate.

Not me, I was just giving the only result I could find, intending no assertions about its validity. Manually, I found an answer for LibreOffice with approving responses, but the OP is using OO.

The LO one is
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\4\crash
Briefly looking at the files in that folder - they're mostly in binary format with nothing in the readable bits which look like document contents at all.

I doubt the OP has anything to worry about seems to be the answer here...
