[Solved] Using Find drop-down causes crashed documents

Post by m13m13 »

First I'm going to admit that I found several other threads addressing this same problem. Their only (iffy) solution is to screw with your user profile. I'm not willing to compromise my entire operating system just to learn that it didn't do any good anyway.

What I find interesting is that the very same function on Writer works just fine -no crashing.

The other suggestion is to switch to LibreOffice. I'm already running around in circles trying to crank back in all of my customizations (specifically colors and a few toolbar additions) on my newly downloaded and installed OO suite. I hate change; it just stresses me out. This is probably a question for a different board, but does LibreOffice forget your color and other customizations everytime it upgrades?

What I plan to do to compensate for this error is remove the find toolbar and just use the Search & Replace dialog box. I'll see how annoying that will be for awhile before doing any switching.

When we tell you that you have to mess with the user profile, we mean the OpenOffice user profile, not your Windows user account. The user account is a set of folders where your customizations are saved. See [Tutorial] The OpenOffice User Profile and [Tutorial] Profile reset on Windows 10 - with images for more information about it.
You can probably copy the files with your OpenOffice customizations to the LibreOffice user profile - it has the same structure or used to have the same structure. Hope that hint helps you a bit.

What's a "Find Drop-down"?
On Windows 10: LibreOffice 25.2.4 and older versions, PortableOpenOffice 4.1.7 and older, StarOffice 5.2

I got this...

On the toolbar area at the top of the Calc (and Writer) window, it's a function that is contained in its own separate toolbar; it doesn't include any other functions in that toolbar. It's a box that always has "Find" in it in light gray text. You type a text string in the box which then makes the up arrow and down arrow to the right of the box activate by turning a darker color instead of being grayed out. If you click on the up arrow, the search proceeds in an upward direction from where you left the cursor in the document. Likewise with the down arrow. When the search gets to the end of the document's text, a pop-up message asks if you want to continue beyond where the search started (like back at the beginning of the document, for instance).

If the Find drop-down toolbar isn't at the top of the window, you can do the same thing by selecting Edit on the Menu bar then Find & Replace to use the dialog box. It has a lot more options, but you don't have to use any of them to make a simple search work.

Anybody: did I get that right?

Under Tools, Customize, tab Keyboard, you can delete the functions of Ctrl+F and Ctrl+H, then assign Find and Replace from category Edit to Ctrl+F. Then you won't see the Find toolbar anymore.

Not at all since the customization is in the LO user profile, same as AOO.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the button if your issue has been fixed.
