I had to buy a new laptop computer, and in so doing, I had to download and install the latest version of OpenOffice. Immediately I see something in my Writer documents that wasn't there before, and I'd like to know if I'm stuck with them or is there a default way to get rid of them... these gray boxes appearing in my text frames. It looks like they're there to show how much room is being allowed between the edges of the text and the edges of the frame. I realize they don't get printed, but I don't even own a printer. The main thing I do with my documents is look at them on the screen. I find these gray boxes to be rather offputting.
Can they be eliminated universally?

Try going to the menu Tools -> Options, expand the OpenOffice list and select Appearance. In the table of items in the middle of the dialog, in the General section, turn off Object Boundaries.

Okay, so here's the thing, FJCC... did you know you're smarter than Google's Generative AI -because I asked and it flat-out told me it couldn't be done. Kudos to you and thank you so much.

Not what you might call a very high bar - no offense to my colleague FJCC. The difference is helpers here have actually used the software and are familiar with it.smarter than Google's Generative AI

I hate this damn computer, I wish that I could sell it.
It won't do what I want it to, Only what I tell it.

I'd have to agree. I have personally made feedback to their AI to report all kinds of stupid advice they give, particularly on cooking and grammar issues (a couple subjects with which I'm familiar). But I continue to use it because, once in awhile, it actually comes up with some advice I hadn't found anywhere else, and it turns out to be helpful.
