[Solved] Windows 10-to-11 transition

Post by WayneR »

I'm currently using OpenOffice 4.1.15. Will I need to take any steps after upgrading from Windows 10 to 11 on the same computer?

I posted the same basic question about 3 years ago, but put off making the transition. Now that I'm running out of runway, I'm asking the question again in case there have been new developments. For example, one basic question is whether I'll need to reinstall the program or will there be a seamless transition?

Notes:
- all files are automatically backed up onto a cloud-based server.
- I might make the transition to LibreOffice after I've settled in with WIN11.

Thanks in advance

You would be best switch to LibreOffice as soon as you transition to Windows 11. There are several good reasons for making the switch, some of which are mentioned here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information

P.S. Your forum signature says you're on Windows 7 and OpenOffice 4.1.7
LibreOffice 25.8.0.4 (x64) installed to Windows 11 Pro. 24H2
Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.15 [Portable Apps]

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the button if your issue has been fixed.

If you are doing an in-place install of Windows 11 your current programs should be kept as the install proceeds.

However, if you are intending to download a Microsoft Windows 11 ISO and do a from scratch install of Windows 11 then you would need to install all your programs and make all settings for those programs and Windows from scratch too. For Windows itself you can do some basic setting of settings by using Rufus to make an installer bootable flash drive. I used Rufus myself to install Windows 11 and found it excellent — though, as always, backup all your data no matter what route you do the install by, 'in-place' or 'ISO'.

If you know how to it, best advice of all is to backup your entire system before attempting to install Windows 11 using disk imaging software, such as TeraByte. In this way if anything catastrophic happens during an attempt to install Windows 11 you can easily get back to your previous (old) system with all your data still intact as at the time you made the disk image. There is a bit of a learning-curve with disk imaging software but it is well worth the time and effort.
