File is destroyed. One should _always_ observe the USB removal protocols of the operating system.

See if there is a backup in the OpenOffice User Profile. Also try an undelete utility such as Recuva or PhotoRec to see if it finds a deleted work file.

Completely corrupt. Libreoffice is unable to repair the file and cannot open it.

When opening an uncorrupted ODS file, OpenOffice never shows the Text Import dialog. You cannot recover a spreadsheet using the Text Import dialog. If you get that dialog for a spreadsheet document, it means the file is corrupted and you will need to recover it from a backup. If you have not made any backups, review these tutorials.

It's a well known bug in AOO where AOO writes the file to a buffer and, before the operating system writes the buffer contents to disk, the user shuts off the PC. There can be a delay of five seconds before the buffer gets written giving the user plenty of time to slam the laptop lid shut ... and lose his or her file.

The bug appears to have been fixed in LibreOffice where writes are no longer buffered.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.
