[Solved] AOO doen't start - Fatal exception: Signal 6

Post by giuvi »

Hallo!

I Have been using AOO under Linux (openSUSE) for several years and I can't remember I ever had an issue to start it. But now ...
I have installed the version 4.1.15 under openSUSE 15.6 on the notebook and now it doesn't start.
When I start it from the console I get:

Code: Select all

~> openoffice4
Application Error

Fatal exception: Signal 6
Stack:
/opt/openoffice4/program/libuno_sal.so.3(+0x37c3a)[0x7fbb55c37c3a]

/opt/openoffice4/program/soffice: Zeile 121: 5594 Abgebrochen (Speicherabzug geschrieben) "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"
What I tried:
a) deleted the .openoffice folder from /home
b) de- and reinstalled it
But no success!

NB: I use AOO in the same version on the desktop PC on openSUSE 15.6 too.

Any Idea what is the problem source and hot to solve it?

Appreciated for any suggestion, but not using LO instead.

@robleyd,

thanks for replay!

Actually, I had already red some old similar threads for linux, before posting my one and - shortly said, I did not find a passaple solution. Searching for solution before posting is always my first step!

1) viewtopic.php?t=111739&hilit=Fatal+exception&start=30
It is classified as "solved", but it isn't really. See the last post there:
but OpenOffice still won’t start up. It starts, then disappears. Now I’ll have to work on my translation and phonetics project using AOO in VirtualBox until I can find out what’s wrong now.
2) viewtopic.php?t=110754&hilit=Fatal+exception
This case concerns an installation problem on Ubuntu. Not applicable to me, because I use openSUSE, which has a different install method.

3) viewtopic.php?t=105939&hilit=Fatal+exception
This also classified as "solved", but it isn't! -> #6:
(...) I have modified the bootstraprc file as indicated and that makes a small difference because the appplication doesn't crash anymore for the normal user but doesn't load much more too.
4) viewtopic.php?t=101197&hilit=Fatal+exception
Not solved!
5) viewtopic.php?t=98109&hilit=Fatal+exception
Solution here: using a live linux OS (in this case Manjaro) on USB device. Not applicable for me, cause there is no live openSUSE 15.6

I also read some others threads found by google - no solution.

The last check:
I compared the installation packages of AOO and related needed packages on the desktop PC (where OO runs without issues) with the ones on the netbook and I did find no difference. That's why I can not at all understand, what is going wrong on netbook AOO!

I'll change to LibreOffice until a solution is found, even if I find LO ugly end heavy ...

By reading again that topic, especially that post, it's not clear if OP used root to launch AOO or to install AOO. The latter being the standard way to install, you cannot do that without being root (or sudo).

Have you tried to change the icon theme?
What is the difference to consider it heavier than AOO?
Considering the improvements of LO over AOO, the choice doesn't take long anymore.

a) Does "OP mean operator?
b) I think It is not relevant at least for me how OP launched and/or installed AOO. Under openSUSE - and I think under all other linux OSs too - it is not possible to install packages without root permission. Obviously it makes no sense to run AOO as root (admin) - AOO is a user application and does not give no admins tools or any advantage for admins.

Considering the improvements of LO over AOO, the choice doesn't take long anymore.
some examples:
1. On putting in the today date in German language configuration (05.03.2025)
in AOO you need only put in 5/
in LO you must type 5.03.2025 - if you type 5/ LO does not "understand" it as date value.

2. A lot of AOO functions are not recognized and cell gives out error.

3. More problems with macros: you must correct all macros!

4. My experience (old) is that dialogue boxes are often displayed uncompleted or invisible
That is only what are crossing my mind in this moment ...

BTW: I find something strange, that an Apache OpenOffice suggests to abandon AOO and to use LO.
I think, it might be tried to solve issues in order to continue using AOO first.

OP means Original Poster.

Interesting point for the date, indeed.

Macros are also an issue, I had to adjust mines too but no big deal at all AFAIR.

Without doing the history of this forum, we are a bunch of volunteers who used to help in a forum that was crumbling. We started this forum on Apache servers with the AOO project but the point was to support all variants of OOo. Thus including LO (as stated in the banner at the op of all our pages).
And eventually, for many power users, it became clear in the long run that AOO development was almost dead and that LO was a far better bet (thus, don't hold your breath for anything linked to AOO bug resolution or feature requests). I was quite sad to switch from AOO to LO some years ago but I have no regret. I had very few adjustments to do but I gained a lot in my daily work efficiency.

I am sure, it was no big deal to rewrite your macros, because you know the apache macro skript language

Surely good arguments to skip to LO! For me is it not the case: I only use the notebook (where there is this issue with AOO) when I have to private work outside home - max. 4 weeks in a year. On the desktop PC AOO runs perfectly!

PS: I see, this thread are becoming a discussion about pros and contras AOO and LO and that helps me not really ...

Agreed, we are drifting out of topic.

Back to your issue: I were you I would ask the AOO mailing list (dev and/or user) to ask if someone runs AOO correctly on the notebook you use (give its detailed configuration). It may be a compatibility issue with the hardware.
Providing those details here might help as well.

Hallo
PS: I see, this thread are becoming a discussion about pros and contras AOO and LO and that helps me not really ...
But it doesn't hurt if you just install Libreoffice and give it a try…

Do you mind, could the issue depend on the hardware? I don't think so. I had already used AOO on the same Notebook until January. Then I upgraded von openSUSE Leap 15.5 to 15.6 and now AOO starts no more.
There is another attempt I can try, but only in 3 -4 weeks. I'm going to rise in few hours an I'll come back in 2-3 weeks. In this time I cannot make this attempt.
I'll report about them, after done.

I'll write here later, in 3-4 weeks again!

Indeed, I had missed that.
Then it's something in the openSUSE upgrade that broke something. I guess you've asked the openSUSE forums too.

CLOSING AN OLD TOPIC: AOO doen't start - Fatal exception: Signal 6

Post by giuvi »

Hi!

On Mar 05, 2025 2:06 am I started the topic:
viewtopic.php?p=552233#p552233

And in the post of Mar 05, 2025 7:37 pm (unfortunately the posts are not numbered) I promised to make another test some weeks later.
I've done it, but few months later and meanwhile forgot, to report this in this forum.
So, now is the time.

The last test (successful):
I installed OpenSUSE Leap 15.6 again, and then AOO without issues..
But there was a difference between the first and the second OS installation.
In the first one both the /home and the /DOCS (where I save my Documents) directories were placed on two different partitions on a SD card.
In the second (successful) installation I moved the /home partition on the internal hard disk.
I think it was the cause of >Fatal exception: Signal 6<.

Bye

Post merged in initial topic (that I just unlocked).
Thanks for the follow-up.
Weird because with xubuntu and Mint (LMDE), I've always had my documents on a separate partition (that is on a different drive actually) and never had any problem.
