"Select Text" color changer

Post by intanet »

I have upgraded my OO to the most current version (4.1.2) in hopes that there would be an improvement on the "select text' color as I was led to believe on a message post I encountered while searching out this problem. By "select text" color, I am referring to: when you want to select text in order to copy and paste it else ware. But, my real problem is when using the "find" tool to find text in a document. The color is so light that you can't always spot it. Anyhow, I read in a posting where someone mentioned that: this feature (about being able to change the "select text" color) would be made available in a newer version so, I updated my OO to that version but it wasn't available in that version so I then, I updated it to the most recent one (4.2.1) the other day and it still is not available. Someone suggested to change the "transparency" in Options/OpenOffice/View which I did (made it less). The color gets darker, yes but then, it makes the color muddy and the characters difficult to read. I finally unchecked "Transparency" altogether and got a reasonable solution for now...the "select text" color is now black and the characters are white so I can see them now. But, it just seems odd to me that OO would not allow the standard brownish color that is used for selecting text in all other applications to be used in their software. Am I missing something? Has this feature been added and, it's just that I don't know where to find it?
Thanks for your help.

Many of the colour selections for OpenOffice are made in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice : Appearance. One also has the option (same path :View) of choosing an icon theme and size. I think you will just have to experiment until you find a combination that best suits your individual needs..

Thanks for getting back to me Rory. No, these settings don't apply to "select text" color. I've tried them all.

When "Transparency" is off, the "select text" colour is the inverse of the document background. By adjustment of the document background you may be able to arrive at a compromise setting that suits you. Perhaps one of the (lighter) cyan colours might not be objectionable; this depends very much on one's individual colour perception and liking.

Yes, I read that post. That is actually the post I was referring to in my posting which suggested to reduce the transparency. But, when I did (as I also mentioned) it made the text look muddy. I compared it to a selected text item in Notepad which is a darker color but very see through. I don't see this as the solution to the problem so, I'll leave it open hoping for a better one. Funny, as I'm writing this, I selected some text (but before I posted it since after it posts on the forum, the selected text is black) anyhow, that is the exact color I'm looking for. Dark but clear enough to see the text through. I don't understand why they changed this up. It used to use the system colors, I am assuming as all the other applications use. But this light color makes it hard to spot. Anyhow...

04-16-2025: I'm using Open Office 4.1.15 on a Mac laptop. This question hasn't been addressed in years, so I thought I'd answer it because most of the advice I found online was so old that the instructions were non-functional.

*PROBLEM: The difficulty that was driving me crazy was that when I use the "Find" function in a document or whatever, the selection color was such a pale blue that I couldn't see the selection!

*SOLUTION: OPEN Open Office software. Go to top menus. Click on "Open Office" > Click on "Preferences" > Click the down arrow to the left of Open Office > Click on "View" and uncheck "Transparency" box.

*RESULT: Now, when I do a "Find" in Open Office, a black box appears around the word I was searching for and, while selected, its text is white which, against the black, is definitely see-able. Yay !!!
