General Error at open or save using Manjaro Linux

Post by bcripps »

I recently switched from Zorin OS to Manjaro (Arch) so that I could download OpenOffice 4.1.15 from the AUR Package Manager. Then moved my documents (produced in Libra), over. Now when I try to open a .odt document I get “document uses an unsupported version of the OpenOffice format. Update now.” When I click on Update it tells me OpenOffice is up to date. I click on Close and I get General Error. Clicking on that and the document opens.
Would appreciate any ideas on how to clean this up.

Reason: Edit subject to show that the main problem is with opening or saving files, not with the "unsupported version" message

LibreOffice uses an updated version of the ODF specification with new features that Apache OpenOffice doesn't support. If you have LibreOffice on your system already, it's best to use that. It gets regular updates and has better support of the MS Office document format.

Thanks Floris but I don't have Libra Office installed. Never liked it and always preferred OpenOffice.

I find that normally .odt files originating in LibreOffice will open correctly in OpenOffice. Click on "Ignore" when prompted.

Hi Rory... I don't see "Ignore" just "OK"
When I click on it, sometimes the document opens and sometimes I have to click on the OO icon in the Dash. I'm going through five steps just to open the document.
Thanks,

On my computers a LibreOffice file opened in OpenOffice will prompt for "ugrade now" or "later", or something similar. Choose not to upgrade.

yes, it's "Later" ...clicking on it brings up the "General Error" and clicking on that opens the document.

If your document does eventually open Save As under a different name in .odt format, and see if that "new" file will then open quickly

Thanks. Will try.... and also...
I'm experiencing a lot of trouble accessing the forum. A lot of “Timed Out” and “Site Can't Be Reached.” I'm using Brave and Wolf browsers, Ublock is turned off and I have a good wifi signal. I can log onto email and other sites without issue but not the OO Forum without trying multiple times. And when I do get on, it takes 60 to 120 seconds for pages to load. Something is really screwed up. It just took 69 seconds for the log in screen to appear. Then two tries to log in, the second taking over a minute to complete.

Yes, we know. Not quite clear if it is an attack or AI bots crawling the forum. It has been so for the last couple of month on and off. We thought we had the proper counter measures but it came back yesterday. Some work again for our technical guy.

If you get "error Saving the file", best to ctrl A to select all, then /Edit /Paste Special to paste into a blank file as unformatted text. You will have to redo the formatting, of course.

Do you mean that any brand new documents gives a general error? That would mean there is an issue with the rights on the folder.
Because creating a brand new document and pasting merely text in it should not give any trouble when saving.
Have you tried to save in another folder?

A folder one should always be able to Save in is one's Desktop folder - not ideal, because it clutters up Desktop, but OK to do this to ascertain if the problem is file permissions.

I created a new .odt document in OpenOffice and File>Save As. I double clicked Desktop, named the document Test. By default, it is an .odt Text Document. I get “Error Saving the document Test. General Error. I click OK and the window closes but the document is still open. I close the document and open Desktop. The document is there, I click on it and get General Error. I click OK and the document opens.
That help?
Thank you... Bry

Is the exact message "Error saving the document General Input/Output Error."?
Usually the problem is with access rights to the folder IIRC.
Have you tried to reset your OpenOffice user profile?

Reset my profile but it didn't help. I haven't been able to reproduce "Error Saving Document" but still get "General Error. Is there a way to send Screen Shots? Maybe you'll spot something I'm missing.
Thanks for all this...

I haven't been able to re-create the “Error Saving the Document” so I guess that's good. Also getting an
OpenOffice “Null is Ready” but it doesn't provide a course of action and closes quite quickly. And my old .doc files seem to open normally, the problem centering on .odt files.
Some attachments here, if they help...

If you paste the content as unformatted text or if you type few letters, just so that it is not empty, same issue?

If I open OO and type a few words then save to Documents as an odt file, I get “Error Saving the Document General Error.” I click on OK and the file saves to Documents. When I open the file, I see “General Error” and at the top of the screen, “Null is ready.”
If I do exactly the same but save as a doc file, I get “Keep Current Format” and I click on yes. The doc
file closes, saves, and opens normally.
Thanks for hanging in there...

You mean that the issue only occurs with .odt??? That would be weird.
Can you try to run AOO with sudo as root just to check? I know it is to be avoided for regular use, it's only to test it the application has issues also when it has all rights granted.
Mr.Dandy wrote: Fri Apr 11, 2025 8:27 am What do you means? You save as Microsoft DOC format?
It is not the point. It was only a test since until then we talked about .odt only.
But it is a very interesting test, thanks for the idea bcripps! If the issue lies with the file format, that would be quite something, but limited to that Manjaro install I guess.

A passing thought: do you have backups enabled in Tools | Options | Load/Save | General? I note that no backups are created when saving in .doc format, so I wonder if there is an issue with permissions on the location where backups are saved?

In that case, I would strongly suggest deleting the OO User Profile,, so that it was a "clean" reinstall.

Thanks everyone for your support.
Dandy: the OO default save is to .odt. When the “Save As” window opens, I scroll down to .doc and save. The file is now saved as a .doc file.
Sorry Hagar, what is the exact command you want me to run in the Terminal? And YES, the problem seems to be with .odt files, thought I only compared it to a .doc file.
Robleyd: “Always save a back up copy” is not enabled (see attachment), for neither .odt nor .doc files.
And finally Floris & Rory: I can't be sure, but as Hagar suggested, I did re-set my User Profile but that accomplished nothing.
Again, thanks everyone. Your time is appreciated.

You have posted this problem in a Linux thread, and your Forum signature indicates that you use both Windows and Linux distro Zorin. Does the problem occur on both Windows and Linux?
