[Solved] Document file is locked for editing by Unknown user

Look in the folder in which you have saved the file in question, and delete any file with a name similar to

Code: Select all

.~lock.Filename.odt#
Where Filename.odt is replaced by your filename and extension.

Also look in the root of your OpenOffice profile - details are given in
[Tutorial] The OpenOffice User Profile
and delete any file named

Code: Select all

.lock
beside the User folder.

This may have happened because you closed your computer or powered down without allowing the few seconds for the OO housekeeping to be written to disk, or you may have had a computer or program crash.
I have delete the lock file ods but after deleting and opening the file it was saying write error the file could not be written

Give us more details about your system: which Windows edition is used?

You could try to reset the whole profile reset your OpenOffice user profile.
If no change, you can try LibreOffice: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information. At least a portable version to see if it does better.
Just to make sure: you can create a brand new document in that folder and open it with no problem, correct?

A reset of the OpenOffice User Profile, as outlined by Hagar (above) should sort this. The "locked by unknown User" error usually occurs, if I remember correctly, because there is a hidden lock file in the root of the OpenOffice User Profile.

Such left-over lock files remain because of improper close down of OpenOffice, sometimes caused by User impatience in not allowing the few moments needed for internal computer housekeeping to complete, or by program or computer crashes.

How was OpenOffice installed? Did you run the installation process with administrator rights?

Then I think you need to reinstall OpenOffice with Administrative rights, as outlined above by Bidouille.
