[Solved] Label cannot be edited (OpenOffice 4.1.15)

Post by pabloinla »

In Writer, I type on the blank page the info for a single label. I open File> New> Lable which opens a window with a prior address, that is: the previously entered address when I reinstalled Writer and opened for the first time; not the current address. I try to edit the address by deleting existing information to paste, or highlighting to paste, and the Write application crashes, closing completely. When I reopen, I can salvage the previous document, and it opens as a blank page.
The only way I am able create a new label is to create one with the un-changeable, now pre-existing address into a new document, then paste my new address over the address created. I have already reinstalled so that will not correct this issue. Help!

When you use File → New → Labels, this is the Mail Merge feature of OpenOffice. Its use is explained in the Chapter 11 link below. Data for the labels comes from the Data Source, not from entering the information in Writer by typing or pasting. In Mail Merge you don't edit the data on the labels, you just change Data Source. You can probably paste into your Data Source.

[Solved] Connect mail merge document to new data source

If you want to type or paste label data in a Writer document, don't use Mail Merge, just create a frame or a table and position it on the page so the frame/table prints at the correct location for your label(s). You can determine the position and size of the label(s) by measuring the label sheet with a ruler. Frames and tables have settings which allow you to control their placement on the page.

Your problem is due to incorrect usage. Reinstalling can't fix that.

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit ✏️ button and add [Solved] to the start of the Subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.
