Re: Justification problems

Yes I have tried LibreOffice and yes that does appear to solve the problem. I am so used to OO though - having used it for many years now - that the changeover won't be a picnic - not for me at my age!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions but - unless someone comes up with a definite fix in OO - I guess I'll leave things at that.

Until we have a file for detailed examination that definitely presents the problem (best if it is small, just a one page file), there is little we can do. A small file make it easy for detailed internal examination. I suspect the problem is caused by some rogue characters, but am not certain.

Changing to LibreOffice is a work-around.

I agree about the change to LibreOffice - OpenOffice suits me, does what I want, and I see no need to change at present for my work.

Any difference with a Ctrl+Shift+R to refresh the display?
I checked the style inspector with LO and there is no difference between paragraphs with the issue (but that I can't see with LO) and others.

I've examined the downloaded file at the areas cwolan showed; it passes XML Copy Editor's prettyprinting and check for well formed tests. I can see nothing strange in the internal xml about that location. I haven't used a hex viewer, but close examination of text in that area using XML Copy Editor shows nothing remotely suspicious.

Well - I've narrowed it down quite a lot.

It's all to do with the font size.

The text body of all my 'narrative' documents is set to 18 point, Times New Roman. This is because I prefer to read such documents on my Kindle after exporting as pdf (note: there are NO problems with the pdf files) - and I find it difficult to read anything smaller than 18pt. Also I tend to avoid sans-serif fonts.

But I tried changing the default font of 'Text Body' to 16 point (via format/style/modify). The problem then goes away. I tried again at 17 point (not in the drop down menu but you can type it in). Again - no problem. But at 18 point - the problem returns.

I tried changing to 20 point and the problem not only appears, but gets worse, because now some of the text disappears off the edge of the white document area.

Incidentally, I tried zooming in and out, but the problem sticks with the set font size - not with the zoom level.

So somewhere in the code there is a statement like "if(font >= 18)...." or something of that sort - and it goes astray in some way.

I respectfully request that a report be passed to OO's technical development team. This is clearly a bug and it needs to be fixed.

But it seems they stopped the account creation because of spam. It may be a hassle to file it.
Anyway, manpower is now very scarce on AOO and I doubt it will be tackled anytime soon.

Using 18 pt font, try /Tools /Update and select either Update All or Page Formatting. The problem might be caused by an arithmetic overflow in the justification code, which would explain why it didn't manifest on my Xubuntu system, which uses different arithmetic libraries to the Windows OpenOffice.

Well - I have a workaround for now. Use 16pt on the desktop, and only change to 18pt just before exporting to pdf and then copying to Kindle.

I'm going to turn off notifications from this thread now - sorry. I don't think there's any more I can contribute.

Out of sheer badness, try 17.9 pts - you can enter this in the font size selection.
