Why don't you provide a screenshot as I asked before?
Have you linked the files to OpenOffice.app?

Re: After a download not opening my files
I don‘t know how to do screen shot on the laptop And I am not sure. The message offering subscription to MS Excel, has gone. It doesn‘t show again.
All files are on iCloud Drive, and everything works perfectly ok on both iMac‘s that I have on two different Locations. Also, I can see them on my iPad, but cannot open. I think there is no version of Open Office for an iPad.
Anyway, now the Microsoft Excel icons have disappeared. It is again the same as before.

Re: After a download not opening my files
After downloading OpenOffice you must install it. You don't say that you've done that.
Q03: How do I install OpenOffice on a Mac?
Saying "cannot" isn't helpful in the forum because it tells us what did not happen. We need to know exactly what actions you took, what did happen, and what you expected to happen. Often "it didn't work" means "it didn't do what I expected" and the real problem is that the system is behaving correctly but your expectations are incorrect. To help you solve the problem we need to know your expectations and your ultimate goal. If you receive an error message we need to know exactly what the message says.
I have never experienced that. Exactly what action did you perform to cause the file to open with Excel? Macs don't come with Excel installed. Did you install Excel on your system? Are you sure it was Excel? Perhaps it was Numbers, though Numbers would not ask you to buy it because it's already pre-installed by Apple. After you install OpenOffice can you open the file by launching OpenOffice and using File → Open?
Q33: How do I get my documents to open with OpenOffice when I use Finder?
Q59: Can I exchange documents between OpenOffice and iWork, Apple's office suite?
You say neither what action you took to produce the message nor exactly what the message was therefore I can't help you.
Does that mean the problem is solved? If not, what problem remains?
Q42: How can I get OpenOffice to save a image of the screen?
Q30: Can I run OpenOffice on an iPad or an iPhone?
In my experience, many Mac users lack the technical skills (or patience) to create a screen image and downsize it enough to meet the requirements for an attachment (size < 128K). It will be easier for SarayLtd to simply provide the exact and complete message as text in the forum.

Re: After a download not opening my files
I have been in contact with an Apple. The reason is because Apache Open office did not update their software to support Sonoma Version 14.5
So Open Office could you please update it.
According to Apple, the last update was some time ago.
Thank you

Re: After a download not opening my files
Apache OpenOffice won't get important updates anymore. You should move on to LibreOffice, it gets regular updates and should work on your Apple.
LibreOffice 24.2.7.2 on Ubuntu Linux

What is the file format?
If they open fine on the other machines, what are their configuration (OS)?

Re: After a download not opening my files
But it's not clear yet if you manage to launch LibreOffice.
Then, from LO, can you open the files?

Re: After a download not opening my files
Fake news: OpenOffice works on MacOS but you must install Rosetta first
https://support.apple.com/en-us/102527
Your issue doesn't seem to be with the software, but rather with the association of files in the operating system.

Re: Unable to open files from Finder using MacOS 14
Hi everyone,
Sorry for the delay. At first it didn't work, but eventually about a week ago or so I was able to download Open office to my laptop.
I don't know why no and then why yes, but now it works. So thank for all suggestions, and Happy New Year!!!
