[Solved+Issue] Automatic displayed word count
Great software.
Uninstalled Microsoft Office to use this.
But there is no automatic word count. How you could make such a great product and not include such a basic feature is a "Wow" in my mind.
Face it : Most people download this to use the Writer program. Having to click on a word count icon that doesn't even show up unless it is manually installed is absurd.
How could all the other features be designed, installed and running and no one thought about a word counter?
Seriously?
In a program called Writer?
Holy cow.

Re: Automatic displayed word count
Welcome to the forum.
There is a word count feature. Tools>>Word Count, your total characters and words will be displayed in a dialog box.
If you select several words it will be counted also as a separate display, alongside the totals.
LO since version 4 displays the total characters/words count in the status bar at the bottom of the gui.
OpenOffice will only display the character/word count from the above mention path.
You can of course adulterate your version by customising the tool bar and adding it.
There is also an old word count extension which does the same thing.
Personally, I have never needed nor bothered with such features.
Hope this helps.....

I am someone that IS interested in that feature however. Could you please tell me about that mentioned extention or tell me (have spent far too much time trying already with no success) how to customize a tool bar to display the TOTAL DOCUMENT word count ALL of the time. I DO REALLY need it.

See OO.o Live Word Count at https://bitbucket.org/yawaramin/oo.o-li ... /wiki/Home. It says:I would like to have this functionality as soon as possible
What It Does
The macro, when run, displays a little floating window on top of your Writer document with a continuously-updating word count. Instants after you type something, you see an updated count.
LO 6.4.4.2, Windows 10 Home 64 bit
See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.
Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

Re: [Solved+Issue] Automatic displayed word count
I feel you. I second you. Eleven years after your post.
I have recently returned to OpenOffice when I literally could not afford Microsoft Office. I had recently resigned from a working-class job to pursue a decades-old dream of being a (full-time) scholar (who makes a living from her work). I did not have the money for Microsoft's monthly subscription. Nor did I have the time for the company's disruptive and incessant in-app advertising for their inane plug-ins. The last couple of months using OpenOffice has been a love affair. So simple, so useful, so efficient, so INTUITIVE. And no distractions from my work, or nefarious schemes to ingest and sell my personal data.
I have very recently landed a dream job as a staff researcher at a prestigious research institution. I now have access to all the productivity software I could ever want or need. Continuing to use, and love, OpenOffice Writer et al.
That said, easy-to-implement word and character count in status bar would be great feature in next build, instead of the ambitious but apparently unstable plug-ins community-members have been offering. Developers, are you listening?
Keep up the great work you are doing.

There is a Word Count extension at
https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/pr ... controller
which puts a word count in the Status Bar of Writer.
Ignore the warning message at the download site - it works well.
