We need more information: what size is your type? Are you thinking of gradient effect on large headings or drop/ornate capitals?
As far as I know, in Writer one can only change colour of "ordinary" type - select type, /Format /Character /Font Effects. For elaborate headings or fancy capitals I think these have to be done in Draw and Imported as graphic objects.
But if your project is not mostly type (text), such as a banner or poster, it might be better done in Draw.
