[Solved] Opening password protected Excel spreadsheet

Post by DelBee »

I have just downloaded OpenOffice 4.1.15 on Windows 11 Home and tried to open an Excel spreadsheet which is password protected with 4 numbers. However, when I try to open it with OpenOffice it does not allow me to enter any numbers. Can anyone help please? Many thanks?

Try LibreOffice instead and see if you have better luck with that. There are several good reasons for making the switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice anyway, some of which are mentioned here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information

As a further thought, it might be the case the you would need to load the spreadsheet into Microsoft Excel, remove the password, save the file (now without a password), then try to open it in OpenOffice or LibreOffice. My guess is neither OpenOffice or LibreOffice will have capabilities to override security settings for documents created in a 'foreign' office suite.

In any case LibreOffice has better compatibility with Microsoft Office files so LibreOffice is the way to go anyway. For some detail on this read the thread I point to above.
LibreOffice 25.8.4.2 (x64) installed to Windows 11 Pro. 25H2
Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.16 [Portable Apps]
For Java I use Adoptium Temurin JRE LTS Releases.

Can you say what solution you used to fix/override the problem? The information might help others in the future.
