[Solved] Remove cell borders of entire row

Post by rayroshi »

Is it possible to remove the borders of an entire row in the OpenOffice spreadsheet Calc? I would like to have just a clear, blank space with no grid between the title of my spreadsheet and the body of the spreadsheet.

I don't know of any way to turn off the visual grid for only some rows. You can turn it off entirely by choosing Tools -> Options, expanding the Calc list on the left, choosing View, and removing the selection from Grid Lines. You can then put borders on any cells you want using the Borders tool on the Formatting tool bar or the menu Format -> Cells.
OpenOffice 4.1 on Windows 10 and Linux Mint

Do you mean Grid lines or Border lines?

Workaround: Use a Cell style with White background color (and without any Border line). The background color will hide the Grid lines in the cells where you apply the Cell style.

Just my stubborn opinion?
Spreadsheets are supposed to offer functionality, not quirky formatting.
However, try this:

Remark:
The example was created with AOO 4.1.7 and it showed the wanted effect in this AOO and in LibO 24.8.0 as well. No storing there.
Reloaded by AOO Calc it also worked though the Grid setting was meanwhile reset to "show". Everything worked fine if I edited the example a tiny bit and saved it again. If I tried to close it without any changes AOO crashed under my Win10.
Wouldn't guess who/what is responsible for that bug.
Software bugs are our destiny?
On Windows 10: LibreOffice 25.8.4 and older versions, PortableOpenOffice 4.1.7 and older, StarOffice 5.2

You use both borders and grid in your topic. Those are different features of Calc.
• Cell borders are set by the Format → Cells → Borders dialog. You can set the borders for any cell or group of cells. Borders are shown when the sheet is printed or exported to PDF.
• The grid is controlled by the option Calc → View → Visual Aids → Gridlines. Options are set with OpenOffice → Preferences on a Mac, Tools → Options on other platforms. This setting affects every cell on every sheet in that spreadsheet. The grid is shown to you on the screen when viewing/editing the sheet. Unless you activate Format → Page → Sheet → Print → Grid, the grid does not appear when the sheet is printed or exported to PDF.

You didn't attach a document to demonstrate the situation. I will guess that your clear blank space is the second row of the sheet. To remove borders there, select the row and use the Borders dialog. To remove the grid there, select the row and use Format → Merge Cells.

If you need any additional assistance attach a spreadsheet demonstrating the situation (remove confidential information then use Post Reply, not Quick Reply, and don't attach a picture instead of the spreadsheet itself). I will not help further unless you attach. Explain if you are asking about borders or the grid. Explain if you are asking about:
• the appearance of the document on your screen or
• its appearance when printed.

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit button and add [Solved] to the start of the Subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.

Thanks to all of you for that helpful bit of tutoring. I appreciate it. I understand that the whole 'problem' was not really of major/serious importance, but the more I can learn about this amazing program, the better.
