Hello,
I have finished a large document with lots of figures, which are numbered with the convention "Figure [Heading1].[Heading 2].[Heading 3].[number]". I have been told it should only include the chapter number, and not the subsection numbers, ie it should be "Figure [heading 1].[number]".
Is there a way to change the convention for all the figures in the document?
Many thanks!

Re: changing caption numbers
The Captions of the pictures are not a part of a Picture Style or a Frame style, therefore you can not modify all of them automatically (by modification of the applied style).
My opinion:
You need a macro for this, or you can adjust them one by one manually...

Re: Changing caption numbers
Thanks for your reply. It sounds difficult, but...
Fortunately I discovered a very easy way to solve this problem. If I create a new caption, and go to "options" and select the desired numbering convention, then all the other figure captions in the document are changed to the new style.

Re: Changing caption numbers
I don't see why this can't be done with two separate fields, the "number range" field giving only the figure # (no chapter or section levels) and a separate cross-reference field showing the chapter number.
This will make a bit of work, as you have to configure it manually and insert the chapter field for each figure.
I haven't tried it, so there may well be some hitch.

Re: changing caption numbers
The caption numbering can be changed automatically. I have come across this unwanted behaviour today, when I copy and paste someone else's text into my document. That operation ruins the caption numbering. Before I have [chapter_number].[figure_number], after pasting the text from another document, I got only figure_number.
All the search result I got are how to change the numbering style at caption insertion, not how to change the numbering style for an existing document. That functionality must be hidden somewhere beneath the menu jungles.

Re: Changing caption numbers
Even if styles are mentioned in this discussion, I don't think it is the best term here. Style is meant for the settings of the text itself, not how it is structured.
Thus, a style would not help in this case.
If the chapter number is lost when you paste it, that's because Writer cannot find any reference for your chapter number field. My guess is that either you have no chapter configured (with a Heading X style) or the level does not match the one required by the field.
If you want us to investigate, please upload samples from the source and the destination files.
