[Solved] 1/2 and 1/4 (fractions)

Post by Malibu »

I searched the help screens and this forum but can't find an answer. The question is, where is the setting in OpenOffice to automatically change 1/2 fractions to smaller symbols?

The symbols I want are under Insert > Special Character. But I thought there was a way to change a setting so that when I type 1/2 that it looks like the special character for 1/2.

Thanks

You can do it by adding Replace 1/2 With ½ in the Auto Correction options which can be found under the Tools menu.

Using LibreOffice Writer 6, I found the setting to change 1/2 and 1/4 fractions automatically when typing at:
Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrectOptions > Localized Options
Deselect "Format ordinal numbers suffixes (1st -> 1^st)"

Edit: In my tests with OpenOffice, 1/4 will autocorrect to ¼ whether Format ordinal numbers suffixes (1st -> 1^st) is enabled or not

I have all of that set up -- the replacement, the activation, just not the autocorrect as I type (I'm a writer, that gets in the way) -- and it will not make the changes. How do I get that fixed?

Thanks!

See if Format | Autocorrect | Apply does what you want - type as normal, then use the menu option to apply changes.

This is explained for you in these Help → Find entries:
• AutoCorrect function;options
• AutoCorrect function;text documents

Page 29 of Writer Guide: Chapter 3 Working with Text will also help you learn about AutoCorrect.

To have Writer replace 1/4 with ¼ when you type a space after the 4, all three of these must be present:
• A replacement entry in Format → AutoCorrect → AutoCorrect Options → Replace
Replace 1/4 with ¼
Replace 1/4 with ¼

• A check in the [T] column for Use replacement table of Format → AutoCorrect → AutoCorrect Options → Options

All of those settings are defaults, so if those settings are enabled and you're still having difficulty, you could try
resetting the user profile, which often corrects strange problems which are unreproducible by others.

Your forum signature, FYouOO, shows that you use OpenOffice 3.1 which was released in 2009. It is unlikely that anyone can help you if you are having trouble with 3.1, but you can upgrade to a more recent version (I use OpenOffice 4.1.7 and 1/4 autocorrects to ¼ for me) and see if that provides a solution. The user name you've selected seems like a poor choice, as it could be disrespectful to the very people who might be able to help you. If you want to change your use name, you have to ask an Admin (select a name → Send private message). You are not allowed to change it yourself; this is intended. Open a new topic if you have any questions about changing your user name.
