Re: Convert Microsoft Word to OpenOffice
To convert a Word document, open it with the menu File -> Open and then save it with the menu File -> Save As. Make sure the File Type is set to ODF Text Document.
There is always a risk of formatting problems when changing the file format, so I suggest you keep the original file as a back up.

Re: Convert Microsoft Word to OpenOffice
You should be aware that LibreOffice has better capabilities for handling Word documents than OpenOffice, so you would be well advised to switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice. There are other good reasons for doing so, some of which are mentioned in this thread: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information
That said, the compatibility of LibreOffice with Word isn't perfect and never will be. You should always be saving your documents in LibreOffice format (*.odt for LibreOffice Writer). Treat your LibreOffice document as the 'master' document and only save a copy of it as a Word document when you want to pass a Word document onto someone else.

Re: Convert Microsoft Word to OpenOffice
No need to convert because MS-Word (since 2016 edition) can read/write ODF.

But rendering may be different (just tested with MS Word 2016 and some ODF documents). Showing that the implementation of the standard is not that good.

Also, it is likely that the OP has .doc/.docx files, and no longer access to MS Word.
