[Solved] OLE Objects Lost

Post by James Bejon »

Dear All,

I have a Text document with multiple Spreadsheets embedded in it as OLE objects. They’ve been fine for weeks now, but suddenly appear as shown below.

Any idea what’s happened?

There are some very old topics about that issue, like this one: [Issue] Missing objects and footers. It may help.
Else, can you try LibreOffice? It is under much active development, it may do better. See the [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information.

Thanks for the response—helpful thread.

I’m starting to wonder if, as I’ve pasted in a table from a spreadsheet, then deleted it, then pasted in another one (ad infinitum), my file has become bloated because it hasn’t truly deleted the older attempts. Any way I can check that?

You might want to look at Tools | Options | OpenOffice Writer | View and ensure Display graphics and objects is checked.

Thanks for the suggestion. Was ticked though.

As it happens, all the images have disappeared now. (First time round it was the spreadsheets.) I fear that I may have to look for a different software solution. From what I can tell from googling around, it’s an intermittent issue which no-one’s really been able to fix.

That's why LibreOffice should be a good bet as a replacement.

Yes, that might be the way to go. Though I did see reports of the same issue on there.

It’s a pity, as I very much like OpenOffice’s interface.

Using Linux, years ago I disabled /Tools /Options /Load-Save /General: "Save AutoRecovery information every x minutes" ,and "Always create backup copy" (this latter because my network server doesn't like it). I have lost no images in OO Writer or OO Impress since.

However, I CANNOT guarantee this will work for anyone. It seems to work for me using Linux. I have not tried it using Windows. I am also meticulous in Saving my files (Ctrl S regularly and instinctively).

If you mean you like LibreOffice to look a bit like OpenOffice then try this theme: Galaxy icon theme

I use it in LibreOffice 7.4.7.2 and it still seems to work just fine.

I did see that recommended somewhere (possibly by you!), and I did it. The images went soon after that. I’ll plug a way for a bit longer, and if it happens again, give LibreOffice a go I think.

LibreOffice spent 44K euro(?) some years ago (perhaps 6 or 7?) in solving this and associated problems; there have however been some (very few) reports of image loss in post-fix LibreOffice versions, which may be due to User errors.

Good to know, thanks.

I wonder if that also fixed the spreadsheet issue. They happened at very similar times for me.

Thanks for the advice. I’m finding LibreOffice pretty much fine. The only problem so far is that pasted in Calcs/Spreadsheets make a bit of a mess of Hebrew, but it’s not too bad.

Don't hesitate to open a new topic in the Calc section for that. That would be strange that a formatting issue would be worse in LO than in AOO.
