[Solved] Change the page margins so they always remain the same

Post by markfleener »

Can't remember how i had accomplished this before, over a decade and several rapings from authorities ago, so I'm all scrambled, had to COMPLETELY (including registry and license) remove OpenOffice from the computer to reinstall it, fixing the spell checker that broke ages ago, so yeah, am now trying to remember how I liked OpenOffice set up.

Re: Can i change the page margins so they're what i want everytime i open Office?

You can make a template document with all the style defaults you want. Open a new document and set the Default page style to have the margins you want. Then follow the instruction you can find in the Help under default templates;changing.

I see that I can go to Format, and then Page, to reset the margins of the document, but I don't see anything on how to make it the default format, even going to Format, and then Styles and Formatting (if that's where i'm supposed to be) does not let me "modify" "Spacing to Contents" within "Borders" to save as a default setting?

Here is the relevant text from the Help file. You can access the Help file through the menu Help -> OpenOffice Help.

1. Save the document by choosing File - Templates - Save and saving the document in the My Templates category.
2. Choose File - Templates - Organize.
3. Double-click My Templates in the list on the left. You will see the user-defined templates in the user directory specified under Tools - Options - OpenOffice - Paths. Select the template you have just saved and open the context menu or open the submenu of the Commands button.
4. Choose Set As Default Template. The next time you open a new text document, the new document will be based on the new default template.

So, open a new document, change the margins as desired, then do the four steps above.

Here's what I would suggest doing:
1. Start with a fresh document.
2. Adjust your margins the way you want them (Format -> Page).
3. Now, instead of just closing the document, go to File -> Templates -> Save. 4. Give your template a name and save it.
5. Go back into File -> Templates -> Organize. Find your template, right-click on it, and set it as default.
Now every new document you open should have those margins you set.
