Re: Attempting to UNINSTALL and INSTALL
Close any soffice.bin that could be still in the task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
Else, switch to LibreOffice, see [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information.

Re: Attempting to UNINSTALL and INSTALL
I'm sorry I multi-posted. I may have lost a lot of data and so was trying any possible way of retrieving it. I checked task manager and there isn't any such program running.
I'll try the LibreOffice option.
Thanks.

Re: Attempting to UNINSTALL and INSTALL
OpenOffice and data are two different things. un/re-installing OpenOffice will not affect your data, unless you have done something unbelievably stupid.
OpenOffice keeps a list of Recent Documents; these are merely pointers to the actual data and are not stored within or by OpenOffice. A fresh install of OpenOffice, or a deletion of OpenOffice's User Profile will erase this list, but as one uses OpenOffice /File /Open navigation buttons to point to this data, which will be stored in the original locations where you created and stored it (it is your computer - you should know where) and reopen each file, these will once again appear on that list.

Re: Can't read OO files that got converted to LibreOffice

Re: Attempting to UNINSTALL and INSTALL
I can locate the files and look at their properties but I can't open them. When I attempt to open OpenOffice as a suite from the start list, that also fails to open

What is the extension - the final three or four letters after the . in the filename?

Please don't necropost, especially in topics not related to your problem. I've moved your post here (from Can't read OO files that got converted to LibreOffice).Jonahjones wrote: ↑Sat Apr 22, 2023 7:02 pm I can't open OO filews and so downloaded Libre. You need to install a 32bit version of Java for AOO. See: [Solved] Oracle 8 Java not available in 32 bit. But for LO, it should work with the version provided by your OS.

Re: Attempting to UNINSTALL and INSTALL
I'm sorry if I'm no good at this posting business. I'm on the edge of giving up and so I tried various ways of getting an answer. The java problem is still there with the latest version of java.

OK; we'll work using the .ods file to try to get it to open.
Press CTRL SHIFT ESC to start TaskManager; and kill any soffice files shown on TM's tabs. Don't worry about warning messages - you are making sure no instance of the program is running.

Re: Attempting to UNINSTALL and INSTALL
If you are now working with LibreOffice you might need to install a java JRE that it matches the bit-ness of the LibreOffice that you installed. 64-bit or 32-bit this is dealt with in [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information There should be enough information there to fix your java issue.

And if you are working with OpenOffice, you _MUST_ install and then select in OpenOffice a 32 bit Java.

I'll check the bit requirement of Java next time I have a go at the business. Right now I feel I need a break from bashing my head against it. If I can get Libre to rescue my database and spreadsheet, I'll buy everyone a beer in the Old Swan. Thanks.
