[Solved] Oracle 8 Java not available in 32 bit

Post by hedera »

I'm considering upgrading OpenOffice from 4.1.9 to 4.1.14. I have a 64 bit Windows 10 install. I understand I need a 32 bit Java install also, and that the recommended Java is Oracle 8.

Guys, Oracle 8 doesn't come in 32 bit. I checked. I downloaded it and it was 64 bit; and there was no option to get a 32 bit version. What Java should I get?

The download on this page that is labeled "Windows Offline" is a 32 bit java. There are links on this page with other options.
OpenOffice 4.1 on Windows 10 and Linux Mint

Before you answered, I decided to go with openJDK, which seems to be working. Should I also install the one you suggest? Apparently I need both on a 64 bit box.

As long as you get a 32bit version (for AOO), it doesn't matter what kind of JDK.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the 🖉 button if your issue has been fixed.

My thanks to FJCC who pointed me to a reliable 32 bit Java download. I've installed it. I still can't tell by looking at the app whether it's 32 or 64 bit.

You can check it where it is installed (if you not redirect the default installation) on a 64 bit operating system:
In ProgramFiles - for the 64 bit Java or
in ProgramFiles(x32) - for the 32 bit Java

(On a 32 bit op. sys. only exists the ProgramFiles directory)

Of course - I should have remembered that myself! (It's been a weird week.) Thanks. But it would have been nice to know before I installed...

Sadly, the AOO project has not much momentum anymore. If you want something that doesn't require such additional hassle, install LibreOffice instead. Based on the same code, you won't be lost, the interface is almost the same.

The recommendation to switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice is a good recommendation. For some reasons why you should make the switch see: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information
LibreOffice 25.2.3.2 (x64) installed to Windows 11 Pro. 24H2
Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.15 [Portable Apps]
For Java I use Adoptium Temurin JRE LTS Releases.
