Left laptop on standby; PC restarted; File is now blank

Hi there,

I really hope someone is able to help me out here.

I was working on a file a couple of days ago and left my laptop on standby after saving it. I tried to open it today and my laptop gave an error and automatically restarted. After that, I'm no longer able to open the file I was working on. A window opens up and it's called import text. After pressing OK, the file is just blank even though it is about 33KB.

Is there any way to fix this please?

Your file is completely lost as it looks like content.xml has been truncated. Learn a lesson from it: Never walk away from a PC without saving anything you want to keep.

See [Tutorial] How to find and un-delete AOO temporary files for detailed instructions on how to

a) use Previous Versions (W7 and later) to recover previous versions of the file (is there something similar on MacOS and Linux?);

b) recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was when it was last saved with AutoRecovery;

c) find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which have since been deleted;

d) find any temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file but which have not yet been deleted;

e) un-delete the temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file, and then deleted. d) and e) will recover your file as it was when you last opened or you last saved it.

If you cannot follow the instructions ask someone with more PC skills to help you. Act quickly - the longer you wait the more likely any temporary files are to be deleted.

You could upload the file but I doubt anything can be recovered. Click Full Editor and Preview. Click the Upload attachment tab below where you type for files up to 128 kB max; or use a file share site such as mediafire, Dropbox or Google Drive for a larger file.

Thanks for your quick reply John. I did save it though, that's what I always do. I've been working on it for a couple of years where I recorded all my bookkeeping. I know I should have made a copy of it.

There is nothing usable of data in the file; the size is composed of various housekeeping information, which controls only formatting; the content section is blank.

For the future working: Always create more than one backup copies of your important documents onto various storing devices.

If you go File > Open ..., and open the .ods file it opens in Writer and is full of ####.

See Why is my Writer file full of #####? for an explanation. Your PC crashed after the file was written to the write buffer but before the write buffer was flushed to disk.
