[Solved] Can you switch pages?

Post by MathFool »

Wondering if I could save time and hassle. Is there a way to just switch two pages that you want? Like putting the third page where the second page is, and the second page where the third page is? With using the whole copy/cut/paste thing.

Not in Writer.
Word processing handles a text flow, not pages as separate things.
Copy and paste the text contained in the pages. Use page breaks if you need to have a specific control about your pages.

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Since 2011, did the situation change?

Note: If we have a question and if it has asked in the past, is it out of rules to ask it under it again? Or should we open a new one?

Not at all, for the exact same reason as provided above. Writer is not a publishing tool.

It depends on the moderator.
Personally, I don't mind as long as it makes sense. In some case, there is a point reviving something old. It makes no sense if for example a fix was to be expected soon after the initial post and that it is highly likely that the issue is no longer there now.

What do you mean by a "Publishing tool". As far as I know, some authors use it to write their books.

Publishing tools are for newsletters, invitations, postcards...
It is based on pages holding content, where you have to adapt the content to the page.

Writer is based on content that flows over pages, meaning that the number of pages adapt to the length of the content.

Thus, Draw would be the closest to a publishing tool and Writer would be used to write a book, indeed.

I'll tag this topic as solved since the answer is obviously Draw with AOO/LO.

Yes, If you start each page with a heading style that has a page break before set (via paragraph properties). In the navigator headings and their following text can be easily moved by dragging and dropping with the mouse. See attached file to see/test.

I have downloaded the file, but it didn't work for me. I can't move anything. Headings are fixed in their place. It seems that I didn't understand your description on how to do it. Can you please describe in a different way with steps?

I doesn't work for me either when trying mouse drag and drop. However, the Promote Chapter and Demote Chapter buttons in Navigator do work. So you just select/highlight/click on the chapter you want to move and use the buttons (provided the move you are trying make is a valid move).
Edit: Apologies it does work. Didn't click on the Content View button first.

Press F5 to see the Navigator
Click on Headings in the navigatore
Press the content view button - second row of buttons, second one from left until just the headings are shown
Drag and drop headings with the mouse

I'm not against workarounds in general but it has limitations and requires more attention. The proof being that the description above was not clear enough because it supposed the knowledge about the Navigator feature to manage the headings.

Thus, sometimes, better use the good tool rather than persist using a not so appropriate one, leading to frustration for the user and bad image for the application that was not designed to do that task.

This does not happen drag and drop feature but happens with "promote chapter" and "demote chapter" buttons for me.

I've got almost the same OO and Windows 10 as you so it should work for you too.
All you'll have in the listbox is

Headings
Page 1 originally
Page 2 originally
Page 3 originally

Then you put the mouse on Page 1 originally to select it... then drag and drop to another position in the same listbox.

One way to make things a little easier is to have a paragraph style where the page break before is already set.

The attached document has a paragraph style called "New Page" with Outline level 1 and a page break before set.

Edit: slight edit of file

This means I am doing something wrong. Here is what I am doing. Clicking on one of them and try to drag and drop them.

Press the content view button I've ringed in red. Then you'll just be left with the headings showing and you can move them with the mouse.

(Note: deleted previous post where I ringed the wrong one ha!)

I'm finding drag and drop stopped working for me in the navigator in the sidebar too - don't know why.

Still works in the stand alone Navigator (F5) though. You should try there if the sidebar one doesn't work, or is temperamental.

The chapter buttons work so long as the heading paragraph is outline level 1 (as I've made it) - but they can be other heading levels.

With LO, it works whatever the level.

My bad - does in OO too. That's illogical - its moving the heading up/down - not the whole chapter at all (where its a level 1 heading).

The Sidebar Navigator is temperamental. In the standalone Navigator, Content View can be clicked after selecting the Headings category or one of the headings. Drag and drop works in either case. In the Sidebar Navigator, drag and drop works only if the Headings category is selected before clicking Content View. If one of the headings is selected before clicking Content View, trying to drag one of the headings toggles Content View and selects the Headings category. If Content View is then clicked with the Headings category selected, drag and drop works.

I am trying to discover the configurations. So the standalone navigation is the same for me as sidebar navigation. I must choose "content view" to drag and drop them. That's strange it works for you and not for me.

JeJe's screen shot shows the "Page 1 originally" heading selected in the Sidebar Navigator before clicking "Content View". That will work in the standalone Navigator, but not in the Sidebar Navigator. In the Sidebar Navigator, you have to select "Headings" before clicking "Content View".
