Calc crashes on copy/paste

Post by Bob Brines »

I light up some cells by shift-clicking the first cell, then the last cell. The selected cells light up in blue and Calc stops responding. Windows asks if I want to close the program. Writer works as expected.

Try resetting your user profile. With OpenOffice closed, open any folder and enter
%appdata%\openoffice\4
in the address bar near the top of the folder window. That will take you to a folder containing a folder named user. Rename that to user_old. Restart OpenOffice and you should get the registration screen. fill that out and see if Calc is now stable.

Run your Windows in Safe Mode, stat OpenOffice, and see if it is slow in that mode. If not, you need to look for crosstalk from some application or driver that runs in Windows normal mode.

Did all of that. Calc crashes upon "Copy", either Ctrl C or "Copy" from the "Edit" pulldown. Writer does not have this problem.

Edit: What you are doing is incorrect. You should not shift+click in the first cell.

The AOO Calc Guide states:

[Select a] Range of contiguous cells
...
1) Click in the cell which is to be one corner of the range of cells.
2) Move the mouse to the opposite corner of the range of cells.
3) Hold down the Shift key and click.
.
I cannot replicate your way of working in AOO. When I shift+click in the first cell B3, a rectangular block of cells stretching from where the cursor was (E15) to the clicked cell B3 is highlighted. I cannot select the range I want (B3 to C12) - only the range from where the cursor was.
.
cursor was at E15. shift+click in B3 highlights B3 to E15

Could you please describe in minute detail exactly where the cursor is (the outlined cell) and which two cells you click, and the result. Test with this spreadsheet.

I always select multiple cells by click in the first cell, scroll, and shift+click in the last cell. That works fine so a workaround is to use this method.
