[Solved+Issue] Image & Text problems in .doc format

Post by Triantafyllia »

Open Office writer appears to have too many bugs!

Some of them include text going crazy or being distorted and images becoming too tiny after saving a document.
The issue is that they are not just visual bugs, but get printed on paper as well.

As I work for a company where we use OpenOffice and two other similar apps, time is important and OpenOffice bugs create many issues.
Please do something to fix those bugs and make OpenOffice compatible with other similar apps!

I've included a screenshot to address one of those issues.
The image was supposed to cover the space from the top thick grey line to the bottom one.

Your image isn't very helpful in diagnosing the problem you are having. It shows the result you are seeing, not the underlying cause of what you see. It would be of much more use if you could upload a sample Writer document that shows the issue; also please describe how you are adding the images.

You may also find [Tutorial] Some useful hints on using images worth reading.

Hello,
please be advised that this forum is no developer's area, so your complaints are useless.

For checking your problems (screenshot): Please upload an anonymized sample file. IMHO you complain about a fact which is a result of lack of experience in creating a text document...

Cheers

Thank you for your constructive feedback!
I've been trying to find solutions to some of those issues, without being able to find the cause, hence the frustration.
The way this document ended with minimized images (both the one in the attached document and the company's logo), which is printed the same way on paper, and text as "overlayer", which is a visual bug, is:
1. Coworker who created the document added the image as intended by using the "add image" option.
2. They sent the document by e-mail to a different coworker's pc, who uses LibreOffice. The document appeared normal until then.
3. They sent it to my laptop where I use OpenOffice.
I open it, make some minor changes and save it. Those changes couldn't have affected the images. I've worked with Microsoft Office for years and never had a similar issue.
After saving it, images appear tiny. An extra issue is that everytime I open any OpenOffice writer document a message pops that asks for recovery.

Unfortunately, the file can't be added as an attachment even though it's just 240KB.
Hope the issue isn't compatibility, but in case it is do you know where I can report it so the developers can see it?
Thank you in advance!

Edit: Forgot to mention that every time I save documents I do it by choosing to keep the original format, so it will still open on an older version of Microsoft office that one of my coworkers uses.

There is a 128 Kb limit on files for uploading; however you may consider using a fie sharing service and posting the link here.

I can't find an Add Image option in Writer; do you perhaps mean menu item Insert | Picture | From file ?

The problem is caused by the Crop settings for the image. The Crop settings are -6.06 cm left and right and -2.46 cm top and bottom. Set them back to the default 0 cm and the image should return to a more normal size. You should investigate why these Crop settings were changed.

There is a bug in AOO which affects images with negative crop values when saved in the .doc format. I don't know if this bug is also in LO. If you must use the .doc format, don't use negative crop values in images. See the open AOO bug:

Thank you so much for your help! Setting crop values to 0 fixed it. ^_^

As you wrote "time is important": Try to setup all computers in the work-chain with the same program and version. As Aoo and Lo are free, this should be doable.

And save in .odt

OpenOffice is slowly dying a death, it is much better now to switch to LibreOffice. LibreOffice among other reasons handles Microsoft Word documents somewhat better than OpenOffice (though you should always be saving your Writer files as .odt format files). Also read through this thread for important information LibreOffice is up-to-date with the ODF v1.3 Standard. There are other good reasons to switch to LibreOffice and as Mountaineer suggests you would be better using OpenOffice exclusively or LibreOffice exclusively.
