[Solved] Make 5-generation dog pedigree document

Post by carken »

Hi. My name is Carol and I want to make a five generation pedigree paper to be able to fill in my dog's details online and not have to write them in.
I'm 66 and have problems with arthritis in my thumbs and find it painful to write. I have basic skills and would like to have help to learn how to use OpenOffice. I did complete one using spreadsheets but I'm not familiar with it and just thought I'd have a go.
Thank you in advance.
Edit: Changed subject, was Pedigree paper

Welcome to the Forums.
This sounds like a Base or Writer project rather than a Calc project as it doesn't appear to require much, if any, mathematics.
No matter how you go about this project, you're still going to have to enter the details manually.

Can you show how it looks like exactly?

I'm trying to post a photo which I've resized but can't get it down small enough. I've done it lots of times but I'm not well today and I'm having all sorts of problems. I had a head injury a few months ago.
How do I post a photo on the site...can you help me please? I've been trying all day but got nowhere yet that's why I haven't answered the posts. I feel so stupid!!

See How to attach a document here.
If bigger than 128KB, you need to upload it on a file sharing web site and post the link here.

To Upload to a File Sharing Site:

Take your photo. So long as it is 10 megabytes (MB) or less in size it is not necessary to resize it for the site am going to suggest.

Goto this website: https://imgbox.com/

Once there upload your image file to Imgbox. (Note that your image file has to be in JPG, GIF or PNG format to upload it to Imgbox.) To do that just drag the file from Windows onto the Imgbox window in your browser.

On the next screen that will open up, for content type select "Family Safe Content".
For the Thumbnail setting, just leave at the default.
For the Comments setting, select "Disable Comments".
For the Gallery Option, select "Do not create a gallery".

One you have done the above click the "Start upload" button. (Your image file will be uploaded to Imgbox. And a new display will appear.)

In the new display click anywhere in the box that is titled "BB-Code" this will highlight the code inside the box. With the code highlighted, right-click on it and select "Copy" -- this will copy the code into your computer's clipboard.

Now switch to the browser tab or window that you have opened to this OpenOffice Forum. Start a new message that you want to post into the forum and in your new message paste the code that you copied at the Imgbox website. (Do not alter the code in any way.)

Once you've done that "Preview" your message to make sure you can see the thumbnail of your image. (It will be smaller than the actual image you created, but don't worry about that.) If you can see the thumbnail, and the rest of the message you want to send is okay, then press the "Submit" button to send your message into the forum. Now people will be able to look at the image you uploaded to Imgbox by clicking on the thumbnail you posted in your forum message.

I've found many blank templates to download etc but I want to be able to fill it in online and save/print it. I have a 4 year old miniature schnauzer who is full kennel club registered with documents and a 6 month old unrelated one who is not registered. I've researched and found her heritage and want to make a copy of hers too.

If you want to fill it in online, then you don't need OpenOffice.
It is still unclear what you're looking for.
Using OpenOffice, or any other similar application only makes sense if you want to keep the pedigree as a file on your hard drive and be able to update it later. Or if the template you find don't suit your need and you want to customize it.

Hagar

My point was addressed to the poster - lots of different ways of creating a dog pedigree can be found on line. There is no need to re-invent a method when many exist. Numerous sites offer fillable PDF to create the pedigree.

Also I doubt it needs a database as it's probably just a chart like a family tree showing five generations, namely dog, parents, grandparents, great grandparents and great, great grandparents. A human family tree layout would probably do it too :super:

But still, perhaps carken has a specific layout in mind or would like to have the same kind you found but with some improvements.
That could be something for Calc or even Writer or Draw, depending on the level of bells and whistles needed.

That SignNow form is exactly the type I need and is identical to the one I've been trying to upload to show you. The only difference is I need one that I can fill in online as I have difficulty in using a pen due to arthritic thumbs/hands.
What program would you recommend to me bearing in mind my inexperience? I had a bit of success with calc but I want it in A4 landscape and don't know how to set it up. Also my print on the large boxes on the left are going straight to the bottom of the cell and I would like them in the centre.
Thank you in advance for your help.

The file posted above is merely 10KB. It should be on your drive instantaneously. What are you trying to download???

Carol, the "pedigree.odt" that John_Ha has supplied you hasn't been produced in a newer version of OpenOffice -- despite any warning notice you might have got when trying to open it in OpenOffice. Even if you download and install the latest version of OpenOffice you will still get the same warning message when you try to load it into OpenOffice.

Chances are John created the file in LibreOffice and it uses a different slightly different format for odt documents than the format that OpenOffice uses. When you get the warning just click the "Later" button and the file should load into your OpenOffice okay.

For more details on this read this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=106043

P.S. I assume you are running into the 'problem' I think you will be running into.

Yes, you're right. I just went straight to the table then.
There is a problem though. Some of the names are exceedingly long. For instance the pedigree name on the right at the fourth from the bottom is;
CH FCI INT IR AM CH HIDEKI WHO'S THAT GUY WITH RISEPARK RE-IMPORT

It's a very narrow area to take the amount of characters. There are quite a few but I think that's the longest. The first 6 sets of characters are notification of champion status I think. Why they have to be so long I'll never know! I won't be able to use the table which is annoying as even wrap text will probably fail.

I just managed to resize the one my husband filled in for me.

Perhaps this layout will be better for you. It is sized to print on 8½ by 14 inch paper ("Legal" size in the United States).

Carol, if you open the "Dog Pedigree 5G.odt" that MrProgrammer has just supplied you with you might find that chart is on two pages in OpenOffice. At least that what I get when I open it in OpenOffice.

However, I find that if I open the same file in LibreOffice the chart itself displays on a single page (though there is a second page which is completely blank, so not a problem). You can get LibreOffice here to give it a try if you want: Download LibreOffice

In any case, the chart has been constructed using a 'Legal' paper size (not A4) so you might have to fiddle with your printer or settings in OpenOffice/LibreOffice to get it to printout okay on a single sheet. Just tested myself, I found that it printed just fine to A4 paper from LibreOffice without having to fiddle around with settings at all.

Have to say MrProgrammer has done an excellent job of constructing the chart, it's good.

Thank you both for helping. I will download LibreOffice and give it a go. I would really like to have a good printed copy as the written one looks a bit untidy.

If you split the table into two horizontally you could have the Sire ancestors on one printed sheet and the Dam ancestors on another printed sheet. Each box can then be twice as deep giving plenty of room for long names.

Showing that a problem has been solved helps others searching so, if your problem is now solved, please view your first post in this thread and click the Edit button (top right in the post) and add [Solved] in front of the subject.
