[Solved] OpenOffice versus LibreOffice: opening documents

Bonjour tout le monde!

When I click on an .odt document on my desktop, to open it, it automatically opens in OpenOffice, even though I wrote the document in LibreOffice. Is there a way to have the document open in LibreOffice automatically?

If I took OpenOffice off my computer completely, would all '.odt' files then automatically open in LibreOffice?

Set your File Associations to point to LibreOffice for the file formats you wish LO to open.

Thank you, but please remember, I'm a mere mortal: How and where do I set 'file associations'?

Do I do that when I initially 'save' a document? Do you mean I have to do that to every individual file? Uggh.....

Right click (CMD click on a Mac?) on a sample file of the type you wish LibreOffice to open, and choose "Open With" from the popup, select LibreOffice, and check "Always open with this application"; do this for each type of file you require LibreOffice to open. You need only do it once for each type of file.

CMD + O is the normal way to open a document on a Mac.

I can bring up the menu by clicking and holding on the right side of the track pad, with two fingers: that DOES bring up the menu to choose LO, but OpenOffice remains the 'default': doesn't seem to be a way to change it permanently.

Then you will need help from a Forum volunteer using a Mac.

Thank you for the link: I went there and tried the instructions, but they don't seem to quite have the same set up for me: there is no 'change all' button when I follow the instructions for #5: change all associations.

I CAN now change individual documents, using the Option key.

Not 'solved' yet. I will try googling more....

Did you follow the instructions for #4 to open the Info window? That's where you change the default app and find the "Change All" button.

Thank you! That link you provided worked, with easily understandable directions. Now all my .odt and .docx files open in LO just by clicking on them.

I would recommend those instructions for everyone who uses LibreOffice, or OpenOffice: could they be made available, easily, to new users?

robleyd: yes, googling is possible, but I thought the whole point of this Forum was to help developers smooth out the quirks. Also: the outside sources I found were confusing.
