[Solved] Deteriorating Hyperlinks

Post by newbie97 »

I'm using OpenOffice 4.1.2 on Windows Vista, and I'm having a problem with "deteriorating FILE-based hyperlinks"

[1] This pertains ONLY to those links :

---[A] to FILES on my HARD DRIVE; BUT,

--- links going to internet web pages are fine and do not suffer from the problem

[2] This has happened ONLY in Calc (spreadsheet) so far; I have NOT verified it in a TEXT or PRESENTATION document;

[3] By "deteriorating" I mean that when I create a link, it DOES work THAT day , and maybe the next day or so. BUT...a few days later, clicking on that link generates an error message that the file "does not exist".

---[A] I had not moved the file or edited the folder or file names, but when I go directly to the folder that contains the file, THERE IT IS; when I investigate the hyperlink dialogue box, there's all these other characters (in the link that I did NOT put in there when I created the link);

Original Link : "C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\MOVIEMK.exe", and the file works THAT day; BUT...a few days later, the link reads "file:///C:/Users/Program%20Files/Movie%20Maker/MOVIEMK.exe".

Why does it change? I'm sure the "%" sign probably has a legitimate use in the functioning of a hyperlink, but WHERE is the "20" coming from?

I've tried making the link address the FOLDER only, and I have to manually click the file once I'm in the file-containg folder; but I think even FOLDER-based links eventuallyt hiccup and stop working. What's causing this? Anyone know how to make hyperlinks last "forever"---as long as folder and file names aren't altered.

The %20 in the URL represents a space in the file name and it should not be a problem. Note that the first location you quote is a Windows file path but the second one is a URL, which starts with file:///. What is certainly a problem is that the original path starts with "C:\Program Files" but later you see "C:/Users/Program%20Files/". The insertion of Users in the URL will break the connection. I just made a Calc document with a hyperlink to a file in my Program Files directory tree. It seems stable after opening and closing the file a few times. It certainly should not change just sitting inactive on my disk. I will check it a few more times later, probably tomorrow since it is getting late for me.
