[Solved] OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
I just got this computer it's a
Operating System -- Windows 10 Home 64-Bit (10.0 Build 18362)
System Model -- HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 15-dq0xxx
BIOS -- F.05
Processor -- Intel Core i7-8565u CPU @ 1.80GHz ( 8 CPUs) ~ 2.06GHz
Memory -- 8192 MB RAM
Page File -- 4716 MB used, 4576 MB available
DirectX Version -- DirectX12
And I just installed the Latest Version of Open Office, about 1 month ago, if that. (And I'm posting this on Sat. March 7th, 2020)
Open Office keeps shutting down. It's especially bad when I try using the "Table" button, for inserting Graphs and what not. It's not like I'm using this for anything odd or exceptional, just a few, password and phone number entry's; like a digital phone book, with each person in their own square.
The darn program will not stay open and running. It keeps shutting down, for no reason at all; I can't make any kind of sense of it. It shuts down at random times and out of the blue. I never know when it'll just QUIT taking what I had just typed with it, wiping it out, or messing it up so bad I have to start all over. >X-P!
I have been having this problem for MANY years now, on many different computers, but ONLY when the computer becomes so OLD that it's no longer working. This has always been "The Sign!" that it was about to die and it was time to get a new computer. In the past I could time it for when Open Office started to shut down and not work any longer to the point when I could no longer use the darn computer I currently had.
When the computers are new there's no problem and I can make COMPLICATED charts, graphs and whatnot, 20 to even 30 pages long (on laptops and desk computers) with no problem at all. It doesn't slow down, become jumpy, or skip, anything; at least not until it gets to 30 pages long. But it NEVER shuts down.
NOW I have a NEW computer and the darn program will NOT stay open, as if this NEW computer is about to DIE on me.
And here I just bought it.
Please, what the heck is going on? It's a new computer, I'm not supposed to be having problems like this at all. Is it the computer? That was my first thought, but I decided to go and try asking here first, see if I might be able to jury rig something that will allow OpenOffice to work on my New Computer.
I don't have the money to get anything better, this is the BEST I can afford and returning it will leave me without a computer at all.
So yeah, I'm STUCK.
Please Help, I can't stand it any longer. *miserable!* =-(!

Re: OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
Welcome to the Forums.
Let's start with trying to determine if this is a software or a hardware problem. Can you run OpenOffice on the new system without problems when starting in Safe Mode? If you haven't tried that yet, give it a try and let us know what happens.
If OpenOffice runs fine in Safe Mode. then the problem is with one or more programs and/or drivers that Windows loads when operating normally that it doesn't load in Safe Mode. There are more diagnostic steps that can be taken once it's be determined if OpenOffice works in Safe Mode or not.

Re: OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
Okay, I'll try the "Safe Mode" but I have no idea what that is or how to use it/bring it up. I'm sorry but I am a bit computer illiterate and therefore VERY LOST. I'm Extremely sorry for this. I have heard of the Term, "Safe Mode" before but I have no idea what that is.RusselB wrote:Welcome to the Forums.

Could you walk me through what it is and how in the world to get to it?
Ahh, okay. So is "Safe Mode" something that I have to like … I donno, push buttons before the whole computer boots?RusselB wrote:If OpenOffice runs fine in Safe Mode. then the problem is with one or more programs and/or drivers that Windows loads when operating normally that it doesn't load in Safe Mode. …
I don't know if that's even possible with Windows 10 and all.
*Sigh!* I'm gonna need some big time help with this.
And Thanks Big time so far for answering. =-)! <3 =-)!
And Thank You so much for welcoming me to the forums. =-)! <3 =-)!
I apologize for the crankiness it's just that this darn computer has been giving me problems from the Get-Go and I'm about to return it. …
Or stick it into a shredder.
whatever happens first.

Re: OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
Like many regular helpers on this Forum, I have moved away from Windows, and run a distro of linux. Which distro one might chose is a personal matter - my choice is Xubuntu, but for specialised purposes I sometimes use others. One can make a "live" USB or "live" DVD of most (all?) linux distros to try out before a final installation. OpenOffice and LibreOffice run well on linux - you might like to consider changing your operating system. Note that the change from Windows to a linux is a paradigm shift - nearly like going to live in another country, but as I said, many of us have found it worthwhile.
A good side effect is that running a linux distro will often revive older equipement - this computer was bought in 2008, and donated to me after a friend upgraded to a newer computer.

Re: OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
Thank you for the suggestion, but since I am an artist and NEED to use Photoshop and Video Editing on this computer, going to anything other than Widows is not possible. If I could go to something other than Windows I would have a LONG time ago. I just wish that there were reliable and usable Video Editing, 3D Editing/Visual Programs, stuff to run videos, Voice/Sound Editors, Photo Editors and more. =*-(!RoryOF wrote:Like many regular helpers on this Forum, I have moved away from Windows, and run a distro of linux. So far I have tried MANY programs, all supposedly able to run on Linux, but none were equal to Photoshop and Adobe overall. I'm very disappointed and upset about this, I was hoping that by now, 2020 of all dates that something equal to these programs would exist.
Though if you know of any let me know, I'll look into them when/if I ever get the chance. (As you can tell, I wasn't even able to get back to this forum to see if I got an answer on my URGENT Question till NOW. So I'm a bit busy, but thankfully every once in a while I can grab some time here and there.)

Well, I still haven't gotten a sufficient answer to my question so I'm still looking.
But Thank You to everyone who has responded and I'm sorry that the answers did not fit me.
Don't worry, something will help, just as long as people keep suggesting things, or offering possible problems that might be going on with my computer, or possible solutions We'll find an answer, I'm sure. =-)!
And thank you again to anyone who has tried to help me here so far, I'm a Very Grateful. =-)!

Re: OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
A quick diagnostic, that allows identifying whether the problem is with OpenOffice or Windows, is to start Windows in Safe Mode (look up how), and run OpenOffice while Windows is in that mode. If OO runs stable, the problem is caused by a driver or program that runs in Windows normal mode,
Common candidates are clipboard utilities, AntiVirus that touches open OO files, or a Firewall or Windows Defender, or a continual backup utility.

Re: OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
Well, earlier I was waiting for the original person to walk me through this, Starting Windows in Safe Mode. They never answered me back and instead someone else suggested going and installing some other kind of operating system, which won't work for me.RoryOF wrote:A quick diagnostic, that allows identifying whether the problem is with OpenOffice or Windows, is to start Windows in Safe Mode (look up how), and run OpenOffice while Windows is in that mode. When I get the chance I'll look into this, but thanks for the info. I didn't know that this was how to see if the computer was bad off or the Software was bad off.
And from what I can see of this idea/method it looks like I need some kind of a Key or something? I donno. It's all a MESS and CONFUSING.
I'm thinking of just finding some other kind of Word Program, it looks like this one is starting to go the way of the Dinosaur, sadly and Terribly. =*-(!

Re: OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
This is definitively not a machine issue. Your laptop seems recent and anyway, AOO can run on old machines also. My corporate laptop is 3 years old and my personal laptop 5 years at least and no issue (the latter under GNU/Linux however). I don't think that AOO is a good hint to replace a machine. Especially if you do video/image editing. You'll see issues with those applications first.
You can try to switch off all WiFi and network access, then switch off all the security applications you could have. Check if it still crashes. Even on my corporate machine with all the security layers I don't have such problems. Perhaps you have too many of them running in parallel.

Re: OpenOffice Keeps Shutting Down - New Computer
I am sorry but you are completely wrong. That statement is, I respectfully say, nonsense so you need to change your mindset and look elsewhere if you want to solve your unique problem. If the PC is working, AOO will work. If the PC is not working then you should notice as no software will run on it as it is not working. AOO 4.1.7 runs quite happily on my 11 year old PC under W7 and W10 editing complex 100 MByte plus sized files with images, tables, frames, footnotes, endnotes, tables of contents, cross references and indexes etc. My and my wife's 11 year old PCs run as well today as they did when bought and so should yours if you keep it maintained properly.GlassesG33k wrote:I have been having this problem for MANY years now, on many different computers, but ONLY when the computer becomes so OLD that it's no longer working.
You will appreciate that millions of other users are OK so it is a problem with your PC, your installation and/or your way of working.
1. Strange problems are sometimes fixed by resetting the profile - see Resetting the user profile.
2. Does it run OK when you start the PC in Safe Mode? We need the answer to suggest more.
3. Settings > Update and Security > Recovery > Reset this PC ..., will fix any W10 problems.

well, I fixed the problem. turns out there's a newer version of Open Office.
It's called LibreOffice and here's the link https://www.libreoffice.org/ this has worked perfectly fine for me so far with NO problems, THANKFULLY.
I suggest everyone move to this.
AS for this topic I guess it's over, and can be seen as answered, any moderators out there, thanks for the help anyway.
