[Solved] OpenOffice won't uninstall properly

Post by ta_openoffice_un »

I recently uninstalled OpenOffice using the Settings/Apps menu in Windows 10, but it just keeps popping into Windows Search whenever I type 'OpenOffice' or 'Writer', or any of the other apps. I tried deleting the user files in AppData and the remaining files in the installation directory (C:/Program Files/OpenOffice for me) to no avail. It doesn't give me an option to browse its file location; when I click on 'Open' nothing happens.

Here's a screenshot:

Could someone help me out, how do I delete these non-existent apps from appearing in my search?

Have you tried a reboot of your system after the uninstallaton?

Windows 10 stores the shortcuts for programs in a folder in your Windows account profile. If the shortcuts are still being found after rebooting the computer, search for %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs to open the folder and delete the shortcuts if necessary.

I have, several times.

I searched within the Programs folder and I didn't find any OpenOffice shortcuts at all.

I don't use Windows 10 (which allows me lead a very happy life! :-) but I know that 32 bit applications such as OpenOffice live in one Program folder, and 64 bit applications live in another. So you may need to check the other Program folder.

The file shortcuts are in the Windows Profile - what I would call the Windows Registry; editing this is risky, as one can make Windows unbootable, but a utility such as CCcleaner or Revo Uninstaller might be able to remove any unwanted file associations (i.e., shortcuts)

The shortcuts aren't in the C:\Programs or C:\Programs(x86) folder and, as far as I can remember, they aren't in the Windows Registry. They should be in C:\Users\<username>/AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs or possibly in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs if OpenOffice was installed for all users.

I wish that I could switch from Windows 10, but the thing is I game a lot and Linux isn't really a strong OS to support that. I checked in both Program Files folders and found nothing, even the Registry via regedit. Revo Uninstaller says that OpenOffice isn't installed.

I checked the folders you mentioned and I can't find anything.

It's now apparent that this is actually a Windows 10 problem, not a problem with OpenOffice. You should try Google searches to find possible solutions. Here's one that I found which states that the problem was caused by a separate database maintained by Cortana:

Removed program still shown in windows start menu search
