Text animation.

I am trying to use text animation such that each letter flies onto the screen separately. When I click on the text animation tab, it only gives me the option to group the text as all one object,all paragraphs at once or by 1st level paragraphs. I used to be able to have each letter appear separately. What happened? I am using version 4.1.6.
