[Solved] Fresh installation won't let me do OpenOffice Base

Post by hypGnosis »

I installed ver 4.7.1 yesterday & now i get two consecutive error messages when I try to open "Tables" in OpenOffice Base.

1st Err Msg: The OpenOffice configuration has been changed. Under Tools - options - OpenOffice - java, select the Java runtime environment you want to have used by OpenOffice.

- I <click> OK

2nd Err Msg: The connection to the data source "db_Motors" could not be established.
No Java installation could be found. Please check your installation.

- I <click> OK

I <click> on Tools > Options > OpenOffice > and the Java options panel opens with:

"Java runtime environments (JRE) already installed:
Vendor = Oracle Corporation, Version = 1.8.0.40

- I <click> OK

Then when I attempt to open "Tables", I get the same two back-to-back error messages.

Does someone have an idea of what I did wrong?

The Windows version of AOO is 32 bit so you need a 32 bit Java. See viewtopic.php?f=74&t=69896 for more information.

robleyd, beaucoup thanks for the rapid (7 minutes!) reply.

Your link was most helpful, not so much as I needed to be concerned with 32bit versus 64bit, but that upon scrutinizing the link's commentary, I noticed that when down in the pop-up for selecting a JRE, that the user makes their choice by clicking on a radio button on the far left of the JRE file's name.

I'm more accustomed to selecting by clicking on the file name, which turns to a blue background ... which makes the user think the file has been selected.

I went back to Tools > Options > Java; and clicked the radio button and then "OK" and now I can create/edit Tables.

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to thank you for the solution. I was having problems with LibreOffice Base after a Base update telling me I needed to select a Java runtime environment. I was totally confused as I was just running Base a few minutes before the update. I also went to Options/LibreOffice/Advanced and clicked the name Oracle Corporation and it turned blue and clicked Apply. That did not work. I reinstalled Java and that did not work. Your post totally worked as that tiny little circle of a radio button to the left of the Oracle Corporation is what was missing. I am also using Windows 64 bit version of Java and do not have the 32 bit version of Java installed.

It is possible to use Base without Java if the connected database is either dBase (*.dbf files in a directory) or some ODBC connection to a real database backend (MySQL & Co). You can build and run fully functional queries and input forms without the wizards which are useless anyway. You can create dBase tables, you can run all kinds of SQL statements against your database backend. You can't create embedded reports without Java but you may prefer spreadsheet reports and pivot tables anyway.
